“Social networking is the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself” (Oxford Dictionary). Social media includes the websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking (Oxford Dictionary). The world has seen an exponential growth in social media within the past decade that has truly transformed the way people interact. This originated from Compuserve in September 1979, the first internet service to allow the exchange of emails. Today, hundreds of millions of views, loops, snaps, IMs, swipes and “likes” are shared per minute (Leboeuf, 2016). An abundance of research points to both the advantages and disadvantages of social media and the social networking sites used and have led many to wonder whether we are better with or without it in our lives.

An advantage of social media is that it provides a single platform where you can stay connected with those within your social network. Regardless of location, you are able stay in touch with old friends or family and build new relationships, either personal or business. From a mutual friendship perspective, the world is now more connected than ever. In the case of social networking, the benefits and harms are clear. These apps have often connected the world and united people from different races, religions, classes and political parties to one cause. This power to unify and freedom of speech however can in fact become divisive and lead to immoral, unethical and sometimes illegal practices. I believe this to be the single flaw of social media but one that the rapid developments of technology will soon
