Social justice and equity are bases for any society. Whether it be the abundance of it or lack thereof, it is still one of the defining factors of the United States and all other great powers throughout human history. Frank McCourt showed how social justice affected his own life through a series of interviews and his book, Angela’s Ashes. This as well as many other songs and poems demonstrate the adversity faced by the Irish such as McCourt both in Ireland and after moving to the United States. McCourt’s later life, both as a teacher and a writer, demonstrated how social justice and equity had inspired him to influence people throughout his life.
McCourt’s career as a teacher showed social justice through his influence of students as well as the influence that his own education had on him. When McCourt was a child, he found the value of education after it had been stripped from him at the young age of 14. Despite this, he still was able to reach for social justice by convincing the head of NYU to allow him to enroll. I have received an education completely for free and received the benefits from my parents jobs such as health care and a steady income. They in turn were able to get these benefits because through their Teachers’ Unions, they are able to negotiate with people much more powerful than themselves to get the benefits that my family now enjoys. That is taken for granted even though that is not an opportunity people have in other countries and even Americans in the past were not given this right.
