The lowest in the social order is the slaves and were for the most part domestic servants, and they usually received mild and humane treatment, were instructed in religion and morals, and were not infrequently admitted to the family circle. The next class is the social ladder is the most numerous of all, comprised the traders, shop-keepers, and small farmers. Most people in this class were moderately educated, religious, comfortable and wealthy. The uppermost class comprises of the ruling class, which in New England includes the clergy, magistrates, college professors, and other professional men.
During the Elizabethan era many events occurred. One of these events was the Hundred Years War. This war lasted from 1337 until 1453(Lambirth). This was a major part of history for both England and France. The war started in May 1337 when King Philip VI of France attempted to confiscate the English territories in the duchy of Aquitaine (Lambirth). Henry V had to step up to the throne when his father passed. Henry wasn’t sure about this whole situation but he accepted what he had to do and got right to it without hesitating. The aristocracy class and the immoral lower class were often viewed by society as practically different races. In The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer shows the wide variance among the classes in every aspect of their daily lives. The zeitgeist of the Middle Ages can be seen through his illustration of differences between classes in moral behavior, economic power, the autonomy and education of women during the Middle Ages.
Great Expectations was set in early victoria England, a time when great social changes were sweeping the nation. Such social features in particular class, made for a distinguished divide between available Victorian leisure activities for the upper-class society or rather chance opportunities for those of the middle, lower and under classes. Although particular leisure activities in such times were only shared amongst single classes, to a degree, activities joined the rigid structure of Victorian society. But first came Christopher Marlowe then Ben Johnson. There were many others whose works that are not as well-known as Shakespeare but deserve recognition. Some of them were “Thomas Kyd, Thomas Middleton, John Fletcher, George Chapman, and John Ford” (p. 25 Shakespeare handbook) some of the names mentioned in this book.

Popular opinion at the time asserted that the noble class women led lives of lavish luxury and wedded bliss. Social class is the dividing line between the working class and the wealthy. It’s there to divide people based on their amount of money, education, and land they have. In the novel Great Expectation by Charles Dickens, the effects social class has on people is explored with the character of Estella. Estella is a character that was born to someone in the lower class, however was raised in the upper class. This unique situation takes a negative turn for her life based on her emotions and actions.

There was little room for social mobility, and the class one was born in, was most likely where they would stay their whole life. While this appears undesirable to the modern American, it brought much needed stability and could be seen as comforting that a person knew where they belonged their whole life (Cody). The upper class was made up of the royal family and many high officials, this class “did not work, [and] income came from inherited land and investments” (“Victorian England: An Introduction”). Below the upper class was the middle class, which is considered one of the higher classes, though it is not the best.

The Elizabethan age was a very important time in the history of England. The time period is named after the queen who ruled England during this time, Queen Elizabeth I (Haigh). This time was a great time for the advancement of England, as they were ushered out of the Middle Ages, and into this new era. While there were many hardships, and plague was a common occurrence, the people lived a much more comfortable life than they ever had before (Jonson). Many great accomplishments were also achieved, including Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation around the world, which was only the second time it had ever been done, and the victory of the British navy over the Spanish Armada (Haigh). Another one of the things that affected the Elizabethan age so greatly was the theater.
