Imagine walking into a room flooded with people, some that you know and some that you don’t.Regardless of who you know, your chest tightens, and you start losing your breath. One voice inside of your head is screaming to breath, and another is telling you to get away from everyone surrounding you. While those voices are screaming in your head, all you can do is look around in horror. A short second later, your brain quiets just long enough to realize you haven’t been breathing, you gasp for air, but your chest is so tight you just can’t seem to take in any oxygen. Many people don’t know how overtaking and prevalent that social anxiety is in America. The reason for this is because most of the people with this disease, have lived with it their entire lives, and have thought it to be normal. If someone is feeling overly anxious, they may want to look at a few of their emotional signs. One emotional sign is excessive self-consciousness in social situations; not just the everyday nervousness when getting ready to talk to a crush, or read a speech. Excessive self-consciousness is when you’re walking into school just like everyone else, but it feels like you’re being singled out and picked apart by your peers. Another emotional sign is fearing that others will notice your self-consciousness, the thoughts that may run through your head is, “Am I flushed? Am I walking too fast or too slowly? Do I look like a deer in the headlights?” Although often times no one notices anything out of the ordinary, it’s just your brain causing you to be fearful. Some of which have unpleasant side effects, including, but not limited to drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and nightmares. Another treatment that can be used when trying to overcome anxiety; is counselling. Counsellors can help teach self-help techniques used in everyday life to alleviate symptoms of anxiety. Some self-help techniques are: sleeping a healthy amount, avoiding excessive amounts of caffeine, being more active, and adding extra omega-3 to their diets (Smith). One factor that plays a role in having social anxiety is gender. Gender plays a huge role in mental health; social anxiety is predominantly in women, rather than men. Every 1 in 3 women suffer from social anxiety, though men are not far behind coming in at 1 out of every 5 men suffering. Studies say this is because women are may be more exposed to fearful experiences such as sexual harassment and violence in social situations, though this is more for women who develop it from n experience rather than have lived with it their entire life
