In the film ‘The Dark Knight’ directed by Christopher Nolan and novel ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ written by J.K Rowling, heroes from these texts are presented unconventionally as they defy the stereotypical image of a hero by often displaying signs of cruelty and apathy. Batman is a hero who strikes fear and is cruel, however from Harry Potter, Severus Snape is ultimately a hero who is disguised in hatred and spitefulness.

Throughout ‘The Dark Knight’, Batman followed a strict moral code which was to not take lives, but he did not hesitate while using extreme torture techniques on criminals to acquire information. Bruce Wayne is regarded as the façade whereas Batman is the real face. Bruce Wayne is known as the Billionaire Playboy who scatters away his immense wealth, where the truth is that it is a cover for his nightly vigilante activities. Snape pretends to be a Death Eater, where in reality his single motive is to protect Harry Potter. He might have a cruel, unconcerned appearance, but underneath is a man who is struggling to reconcile his love with his need to become powerful. Both Snape and Batman are misunderstood. This is because both have multiple layers to their appearance. Bruce Wayne hides his Batman identity behind his ‘public Bruce Wayne’, but his true nature is the one that an exceptionally rare few see such as Alfred. Snape however is as cruel and bitter as he appears. They are typically positive, light-hearted and follows society’s expectations. A villain however, is on the opposite end of the spectrum, usually a criminal, lacks empathy, and harms people just because they can. Both Snape and Batman challenge the traditional notions of heroism by fitting in somewhere in between—they are both hard-core realists. A realist sees the world as it is, has the natural inclination to view all perspectives of an issue from an objective standpoint. Batman can see that Gotham is an open sewer of crime and the injustices that live within Gotham’s system, whereas Snape does not affiliate himself with either the Death Eaters nor the Order of the Phoenix, but rather views the world only through his perspective. They are concerned with the behaviours of other people, mostly conventional people who conform to social standards and traditions. Neither characters follow the rules of society. Each having their own moral code that may collide with other people’s expectations. They can be passive or aggressive when it is least expected. This makes Batman and Snape the perfect anti-heroes.

Neither heroes are black or white, good or evil, but they fit in a grey space. Batman’s heroic intentions are more broad and selfless, while Snape’s intentions are more to benefit himself.
