Slavery has existed throughout many different years, races, and locations in our country's history. Slaves have been treated several different ways. Every slave has had different housing, meals, work environments, punishments, happiness, and willingness to work. Over the years many historians have expressed their facts and opinions through books and articles. The authors work can be observed and interpreted in many different ways. Slavery is observed differently in everyone's eyes and opinions. It is also observed differently today than it was in the past. In the past, slavery was much more accepted, and african americans were dehumanized and treated more like animals than people.
The first article I reviewed was “A Troblesome Property” by Kenneth M. Stampp. Many slave owners thought that their slaves had it good. Slaves hated being slaves. Yes, some slaves were treated way better than others but they still craved freedom. There were many runways or attempts by slaves to flee. There were also many slave rebellions. Genovese. Genovese says that the planters always said ‘’niggers are lazy’’(pg 297). Also the ‘’poor white trash’’ said the same thing. Black work ethics is such a broad term good and bad ethics can be described different through everyone's opinions. It is hard to judge black worth ethic in general because every slave and every plantation was a little different. Slave work ethic, is determined by the plantation owner or their master. Just like a good or bad dog, it all depends on how they were trained. Slaves really had no choice but to work and were forced to work so it is hard to determine someone's work ethic if your forcing them toi to the task.
