Leaders are faced with different situations, work with people of varied abilities every day, and therefore have to adapt our leadership styles. This is fundamental when looking for a positive outcome. To understand the factors that influence leadership style, it is important to look at some examples of leadership styles. Situational Leadership Style– This is when the leader themselves assess the situation and then adjusts their leadership method accordingly, for example, the leader will assess the ability of their fellow employee or their enthusiasm to learn and grow in their role. This style uses the attributes, such as beliefs and personal strengths, of the follower themselves in order to inspire them to complete tasks and progress in their job role. Transactional Leadership Style – This leadership style uses the reward and punishment approach as a form of motivation for their team members. The leader will give something to their team members in exchange for the team member has to co-operate and complete tasks delegated to them. Depending on the level of hierarchy of leader, if is known for the lead to offer an increased salary, incentives or even a promotion. Individuals within the Support Team we all come from different backgrounds, have different personalities, skills, knowledge base and experience. Some of the team want to progress whilst others are content with their current position. Whilst there are core skills that are identifiable across the whole of the team, some other has more experience and more knowledge in certain areas. Therefore, because of this variety, leaders have to adjust their style in accordance to the person and situation they find themselves in. Someone from a difficult background may have difficulty in communicating and needs to feel comfortable and safe, whereas someone who has come from a health background may be more outspoken is able to communicate and converse with the leader effectively. An individual with more experience may not need as much help advice and attention as another individual who has only just started the field of work. Therefore, the leader can trust the experienced individual to get on with delegated tasks. Personality is another factor that can affect the leadership style a leader choses to adopt. An introvert may not be confident to ask for help or do things without being given specific steps to take, whereas an extrovert may feel much more confident in their job role and is happy to ask for help when needed but will also troubleshoot issues and find the steps for
