Even though Sir Gawain is a amiable character, some readers cannot entirely overlook the fact that Gawain kissed another man's wife, hid the truth about the green sash, and tried to cheat his way out of the game. I think these mistakes are enough to permanently damage the readers perspective of Gawain being a ideal knight because the combination of qualities to be the ideal knight includes: courtesy, courage, honor, justice, respect for women, and readiness to help the weak. Accordingly, the wife of the lord seduces Gawain when her husband goes out to hunt. Although Gawain resists her , he still accepts her kisses. In addition of not having full respect for women Gawain also broke the rule of being honest when he hid the truth about the green sash. "If the gift meant remaining alive, it might well be worth it". -Line 240 When the wife of the lord offered Gawain the green sash , he knew it would protect him when he went back to face the green knight at the green chapel. So, when it came time to exchange what he had won with the lord, he gave the kiss, but kept the green sash for himself. Furthermore, a ideal knight has a quality of courage. When Gawain went to the green chapel with the sash on, he proved that he lacked of courage. He knew if he had not wore he green sash that the green knight would cut off his head and he would die. So he tried to cheat his way out of it. The green knight even called Gawain not loyal. "So Gawain indeed stands out above all other Knights.
