In America, the word "family" has changed so much over the years. In today's society, family life is much different than it used to be. Single-parent households are becoming more common while two-parent households are declining due to death, divorce, cohabitation, remarriage, etc. Today it is common for children to be raised by one of their parents, but those children often have many disadvantages while there are many advantages to having two parents. Even though both single-parent households and two-parent households have had great outcomes; the financial, emotional, and even disciplinary differences between the two of them have proven that it is best to have two parents in a household.

For example, the love between a mother and father plays a big role in a child's life emotionally because it teaches them what love and healthy relationships are supposed to look like. A single parent can show love towards their children, but there is no spouse to express love to. This means that a child from a single parent family is deprived of that lesson and that can lead to the relationship issues of their own in the future. Also, children in a two-parent household are more likely to have strong relationships with both of their parents, whereas children in a single parent household only have a strong relationship with one or no relationship at all. A sense of low self-esteem can come from not having a good relationship with a single parent. Many kids from single parents carry a lot of pain from not having both parents in their home and that can cause long term emotional issues. Most people say that two-parent families are far more strict than single parent families and they are correct. Two-parent households tend to keep a close monitor on their children's behavior, knowing where they are and even who they are with at all times. Two-parent households also have more than one parent to back them up and discipline children. Also, two-parent households can be a lot more involved in their children's lives and school education. That being said, single parents are constantly working, so they cannot monitor their children's behavior as closely. Therefore, the children can get away with more and it can cause a lack of discipline. This lack of discipline can lead to poor behavior and children becoming more rebellious during their teenage years, which can lead to more serious problems in their
