A child’s behavior can be associated with living in a single-parent environment or in a single-parent extended family environment. This specific article, “Extended Single-Parent Households and Children’s Behavior”, talks about how at different stages in a child’s life they could benefit or act out more when there is extended family involved. The article states that in middle childhood, a child may act out more when there is extended family involved, because grandparents try to raise over the single-mother, which will result in the child acting out negatively (Stolba & Amato, 1993). On the other hand, when the child becomes an adolescent, they will benefit from a grandparent of the same sex being in the household. If the adolescent feels like they are being supported they are more likely to have a positive attitude instead of a negative one. This is why when the child is middle childhood it is not very affect, because the grandparent or other adult in the household, besides single-parent mother, might see raising the child a different way and then the child gets confused on who to follow directions from. For adolescents having the other adult in the household that is the same sex helps them accept authority and will be better prepared to work in the work field. The single-mother just needs to make sure that she has a positive influence in the household for the adolescent and even the middle childhood. If she does not have a positive influence in the household then all of the positive that could come out of it having another adult in the house will back fire and the adolescent will act out negatively.
