“There is nothing between you and Hell but the air; it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up,” a quote from Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, explains the thoughts and beliefs of the time. Many pieces of literature from the same time period tend to have similar themes. Sin and redemption are the common themes that appear to be most redundant. This is shown mostly through the works entitled, The Crucible, The Minister’s Black Veil, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, and Redemption. First In The Crucible, Abbigail Williams and John Proctor commit lechery. Abbigail was only a teenage girl, while John was a married man with three children. Only John’s wife, Elizabeth ever knew of their sin, but when she came to know of it, she cast Abbigail out of their house as a servant or maid there. This is significant later in the play when Abbigail accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft. Redemption came for John when he was given the choice to confess his sins or to save his family’s name.
