Simile: Simile is a literary device used to draw parallels or comparisons between two unrelated and dissimilar things, marked by the use of the words ‘as’ or ‘such as’ or ‘like’. Example: “ He had got completely away from everyone, like a tortoise in its shell” (Dostoevsky 35). In Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel, Crime and Punishment, he introduces Raskolnikov, the main character, when Raskolnikov is deliberating over whether or not he his capable of committing a murder. Raskolnikov has been contemplating his ability over several weeks. As his obsession with his ability to commit murder grows, Raskolnikov isolates himself. He disconnects from the few friends he had made when he was a student in St. Petersburg, drops out of university, will not work and therefore is in debt to his landlady, and even stops writing home to his mother. …show more content…

With his thoughts so consumed by the gruesome crime, Raskolnikov does not put time or effort into his relationships with others. He retreats inwards, like a turtle. As he isolates himself, Raskolnikov also forms a shell to protect him against the influence of other characters, like Razumikhin that might dissuade his from committing murder. As Dostoevsky’s emphasises Raskolnikov’s behavior, this comparison is easily seen by the readers. The word tortoise bring the picture of an afraid little turtle to the reader's mind, and indeed Raskolnikov is afraid. He spends weeks deliberating whether or not he his capable of such and act, even going so far to fantasize about how he would do it. Raskolnikov is also portrayed as small.
