Whitman and Hughes helped shape the American identity and literature. In Walt Whitman's America, the focus is placed on the working class. In the poem "I Hear America Singing, Whitman gives credit to "those mechanics, each one singing"(442). This quote shows that America is built by hard-working and decided laborers.
