This one person’s name is Equality 7-2521 shares a trait with another dystopian hero. Her name is Katniss Everdeen. They were both part of a dystopian societies. they also were the reason why things changed and started to go good. Everything was split apart by the Capitol into thirteen districts. But district thirteen was destroyed by the capitols because they didn't follow what the Capitol had wanted them to do. District twelve was the home of Katniss Everdeen. She was very troubled with the fact that every year the Capitol would have celebrate with a game. This game was where one girl and one boy would be chosen from each of the twelve districts, to fight until one winner was left standing. If you put your name into the jar that they draw the name out of more than you need to, then you would get a reward. Katniss did this every year so that way her family wouldn't starve. Her mom and her sister are the only thing she has, but sadly her sister was drawn for the games, but Katniss wouldn't allow it. She volunteered for her little sister instead. So therefore she would have to fight her way to survive. If she wins. Then she will be safe from the drawing for ever. Her mentor Haymitch and the other fighter Peta make their way up to the Capitol. They both have to present their skills in from of the Capitol. Katniss's skill is shooting the bow and arrow. Her first shot she misses, so they lose interest in what she is doing, so she shoots and apple right of one of the capitols game maker's hands. Each person was evaluated and scored. The higher you scored the better. She had the highest score out of every other person that went thought the trial. Haymitch and her think this is strange, because she could have killed him. Soon they would all have to enter the games, and try to survive. Haymitch thinks that she should try to just run instead of going for the bow, so that way she wouldn't get killed right away. So once the game started,she did what he said. She ran for awhile seeing people being killed left and right. But she had managed to survive for that moment. Anthem is a book full to the brim of symbolism. Some of it is clear to see and others you have to really pay attention to capture. Anthem is not a hard book to understand, but it can still be difficult to grasp the full meaning of it. The meaning of which is elusive at points, slipping between your fingers and resting on the pages in plain view. Unity, we, I, Ego, it all plays a major part in this book along with the symbolism of things.
In the beginning of Anthem, Equality 7-2521 commits a sin, a sin that everyone knows they are not to perform. Equality 7-2521 broke both rules with a sentence consisting of seven words in his diary. "It is a sin to write this," were his first thoughts. This was the very start of Equality 7-2521's break through development. Luckily for him, he was not caught committing this sin. Equality 7-2521 and International 4-8818 found an underground tunnel. This is where Equality 7-2521 spends a lot of his time thinking for himself, and finding ways to bring his society from everything being "we," to people being able to relate to an "I," like "The Unmentionable Times" unspeakable word.

Ayn Rand wrote Anthem as a critique of Communism, yet along with that she demonstrated her own belief system of individual ideals. Objectivism was aptly shown throughout the entire novella with the thoughts and actions of the main characters, Equality and Liberty in contrast with the universal thought of the city and society. Rand clearly showed her philosophy well in this story.

The novella itself is a satire of Collectivism, which can be seen in examples of Communism. Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand, in which Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, struggles for self-identification living in a collectivist society. Equality believes that individuality is an eminent aspect of one’s life because individuality defines and outlines who man is. He endures all the hardships in his life living with people who support collectivism, and who reject his ideas. For example, when Equality 7-2521 invents and exhibits the light bulb, the World Council rejects it and tells him that it is selfish to work on something alone instead of working with his brothers. The World Council threatens to destroy the light bulb but Equality does not let that happen and rebels, so he is forced into exile from his society.

An anthem is a sacred composition set to words from the Bible. This may have significance with the title that Ayn Rand has given the book by paralleling the story of Prometheus and Gaea to that of Adam and Eve. In the bible, Adam and Eve were given everything that they needed by God with the one exception of not to eat from a specific tree. They were told by the devil that this tree was the tree of knowledge and to eat of it would give them knowledge equal to God’s. In Anthem, Prometheus and Gaea are told that they have everything that they will ever need or desire by the council. They are forbidden to gain knowledge that is not permitted by the council but only to do as they are told. Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the pursuit of knowledge and ate of the tree in order to gain equality to God. When they did this God found out and so condemned them and punished them for all eternity. God banished them from paradise in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were no longer given anything as they were in the garden but instead were forced to suffer and survive on their own. In Anthem, Prometheus and Gaea go against the will of the council and Prometheus yearns to gain knowledge that he realizes is being hidden from him. Prometheus hides his studies at first but then wants to share them with the council for the betterment of society but is instead condemned.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand is a classic novel about a man who struggles through life to try and show the positives about a life unknown, unlike the dark and wicked society that he lives in. It shows what collectivism can do to a society and how a community can not flourish without individual identities. Equality is shown as a extremely intelligent young man with great potential to the future of the society, but the Council of Vocations seems him in a different light. Looked down upon by everyone, Equality 7-2521 was given the job of Street Sweeper to make him equal to his fellow brothers and to erase any individuality he obtained.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.
Anthem and Fahrenheit 451 both hit a very similar theme. The theme in Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, and Anthem, by Ayn Rand can be connected to a universal theme, Equality has limits. Both books support this theme by supporting an idea of a utopia, and both failed in its own way.
But in this movie, a person in charge picks a girl and a boy between the ages of twelve and eighteen out of a lottery from each district to represent their district and fight to death. The children, who are chosen, are trained for a week and then sent to and outdoor arena. In the movie, the capitol shows a video explaining the tradition, the rules of the game and how it must be followed no matter what. The characters in this movie have to orient themselves in order to stay safe from the capitol; they also need to follow all the rules provided in order to live. In the story, Prim Everdeen was chosen as of the children to represent the district but her sister Katniss Everdeen volunteered instead to save her sister. After the children are chosen, they are placed in an arena that is controlled by the people who invented the game with advanced technology. The game is being broadcasted all over the world as a reality show, showing the kids of each district killing each other and how they live. The children were almost treated like animals, they were out in a forest setting that is made with the technology, and having to survive off the environment they were given. The main character, Katniss, volunteers as tribute for her district to save her sister from having to be tribute. Upon arriving in the Capitol for the games, she sees just how vast the gap between the Capitol and districts are. To fight against this class struggle, she begins to revolt. At first this comes in the form of small things, like shooting an arrow at a pig feast of Capitol higher-ups and refusing to kill her friend in the games, resulting in the first ever co-victors of the Hunger Games.
