In March 1903 Yosemite Valley California John Muir and President Roosevelt had a goal to help preserve nature. John Muir wanted the president’s help saving these beautiful parks. Roosevelt joined Muir for the journey and headed to Yosemite Valley in California. John Muir and Roosevelt’s goal was to preserve nature writing this was proven in the text. Muir and Roosevelt went to Yosemite and both realized that they had the same goal save the parks. First, they had to get there but how? President Roosevelt reached out to Muir to ask him if he would join him for a camping trip and be his guide “I don’t want anyone with me but you” Roosevelt said. Muir explained to Roosevelt that people were destroying these trees and wanted to save them.
The approach, however, that was taken to deal with the matter is what will ultimately separate Hoover and Roosevelt when the debates to categorize the greatest and worst presidents the nation has seen begin. Hoover was known for false promises, as he would speak optimistically to his audience and never deliver. The people began to resent his words, knowing they would all fall through eventually. Roosevelt in his inaugural address knew the people were tired of hearing speeches that never pulled through and only spoke with truth as he stated: “I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with candor and a decision which the present situation of our people impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly.”

Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most influential people in the early 20th century. His leadership style, his reforms, and his personality shaped an America that was rapidly becoming a world power. Theodore Roosevelt is admirably remembered for his energetic persona, his range of interests and achievements, his leadership of the Progressive Movement, his model of masculinity and his “cowboy” image (). He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the short-lived Progressive Party of 1912 (). Before becoming President, he held offices at the municipal, state, and federal level of government (). Roosevelt’s achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. His legacy lives on as one of greatest leaders in American history.
The U.S. president is a person deemed to be the most fitting person to lead this country through thick and thin. It’s been such a successful method that it has led to 43 individual men being put in charge of running this country. However, this doesn’t mean that each one has been good or hasn’t had an issue they couldn’t resolve when in office. But no matter what, each one has left a very unique imprint on the history and evolution of this nation. However when two are compared against one another, some rather surprising similarities may be found. Even better, is what happens when two presidents are compared and they are from the same political party but separated by a large numbers of years between them. In doing this, not only do we see the difference between the two but the interesting evolution of political idea in one party.
The election of 1912 signified a turning point in American history. Friends, Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, competed against each other for the presidency. Though both progressive, they disagreed on how the country needed to run. Roosevelts ever increasing progressivism caused their stances on many important issues to be much different. Compare and contrast the foreign policies of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Which do you think was a more effective president? Why?
Firstly, FDR did not reach the white house the same way that his 5th cousin Teddy did. FDR had campaigned for the Presidency, against the incumbent Herbert Hoover. FDR was a Democrat; and felt that the government needed to do more to help its people. Hoover a Republican; did not believe in direct government intervention. He believed in voluntarism, asking working corporations to voluntarily improve working conditions and wages. In 1932, Roosevelt was elected president. On the other hand, Teddy instead, campaigned for Vice President in 1901, with President William McKinley. He was a Republican, who served as Governor of New York. In the book Theodore Roosevelt by Louis Auchincloss, I learned a great deal about the twenty-sixth President of the United States of America. Former President T. Roosevelt made many accomplishments as president, and did not have a high number of scandals. Roosevelt did very well in keeping the peace between the different countries, which earned him many admirers and the coveted Nobel Peace Prize. Theodore Roosevelt was one of our most energetic leaders. He was the first president to care about our environment. He had a very good personality, he was colorful, witty, outspoken, and humane. He was also funny, smart, hardworking, and brave. As a child he was called “Teddie”, and as an adult called “Teddy” or “T.R”. He also got the nicknames “Trust Buster and Great Conservationist. His face is also on Mt. Rushmore. He had two wives, Edith Carow and Alice Lee. His religion was Dutch Reformed.
Theodore Roosevelt stepped into head of office on September 19, 1901 when President William McKinley was assassinated. He was the youngest man to become president. His motto was “speak softly but carry a big stick.” President Roosevelt would come into power offering America the square deal. When thinking about nature, Hans Christian Andersen wrote, “Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” John Muir and William Wordsworth both expressed through their writings that nature brought them great joy and satisfaction, as it did Andersen. Each author’s text conveyed very similar messages and represented similar experiences but, the writing style and wording used were significantly different. Wordsworth and Muir express their positive and emotional relationships with nature using diction and imagery.
The degree to which Maalouf would disagree with the statement that Roosevelt made would be comical. The first part of Roosevelts statement doesn’t stray too far from what Maalouf believed. The ability to go to a new place and to take on part of their culture as your identity fits into the idea that Maalouf presents in his book, that our identity can change as we experience new things. The example that Maalouf gave in his book In the Name of Identity stems from his own life experience by being half French and half Lebanese. By looking at this fact of Maalouf’s life in the lens of the first half of Roosevelts quote we can see that by moving to France he was able to, as part of his identity, refer to himself as at least half French.
