Since the end of the Spanish Civil War, there have been many significant events in Spain. These events have helped Spain flourish into the country that it is today. Spain, at the time of the Spanish Civil War was a dictatorship which was ruled under Francisco Franco. Spain’s transition into a democracy began when Franco, also known as “Generalisimo” died on November 20, 1975. During Francisco Franco’s time as dictatorship, there was no king of Spain, meaning that he had full power. It wasn’t until over 30 years later, that Franco would make known to Spain that he would open up the throne for a king. Juan Carlos I would eventually become king. The problem with this was that European countries did not like the fact that Spain was a dictatorship, under Franco, and they felt that Spain would only be a burden. Franco’s goal was for Spain to become a member of the European Union but he would die, never being able to see his goal accomplished. After Franco’s death, Adolfo Suarez, the newly elected Prime Minister, applied to be admitted into the European Union in 1977. Still, Spain had a difficult time being admitted as many European countries were still skeptical, but finally, on January 1st, 1986, Spain became a member of the European Union. Spain would begin to experience dramatic change after this in a positive way. “Financial support started pouring into the peninsula and Spain‟ s infrastructure was completely modernized. Its roads and rail transportation system (which includes super speed trains from Madrid to Seville and Barcelona) is today, thanks to that support, the envy of many industrialized nations.” (Afzali, Modern Spain). The Social party great support from the people and would be reelected in 1989. Spain’s radical change helped bring the Olympic games to their country in 1992. This helped Spain in many ways other than just having their country host the Olympics. The games helped show that Spain was now a modern country and along with the friendly and hospitable people, tourism rose in an extreme fashion. Spain became a top priority destination for tourist from around the world. In 1996, Spain held elections but the Socialist part was not able to win again. This marked a new transition for Spain as the Populist Party won not only in 1996 but again in 2000. Jose Maria Aznar was the new prime minister of Spain and would remain so for years to come.
