Unfortunately for half of our nation’s population, the use of the plant, Cannabis, was deemed illegal. “Before 1937, marijuana was freely bought, sold, grown, and smoked in the United States. Since that time, all of these activities have been illegal, but many groups and individuals have fought to decriminalize marijuana” (Rich, par 1). I find this preposterous! I believe that the federal government should look at what the people want, and pass the law making Marijuana legal, but of course having regulations to go along with it.

When how useful it was got out, it rapidly spread in sections such as Asia, the Middle East, parts of Africa, and even India used it for religious purposes. Marijuana was a well-known medicine that physicians prescribed often. They would prescribe it for just about everything from earaches and for giving child birth By the late 18th century, American medical journals said that hemp seeds and roots could treat many illnesses including inflamed skin and venereal diseases. The governmental figure sees potential with the use of medical cannabis. According to Walters, “Smoked marijuana damages the brain, heart, lungs, and immune system” (“Top Ten”). Walters is suggesting that this study is only going to do harm. Though there are many people who agree and disagree with cannabis use for medical purposes there are pros and cons to the facts of these beliefs. First medical marijuana can help ease pains from diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

Today one of the biggest controversies in America is whether marijuana should be legalized, meaning people over the age of 21 would be allowed to purchase and have one ounce of dried marijuana in their possession.
Because marijuana is not legal in every state, it may be hard for many patients to access it which, “relieves their pain and suffering, or treats symptoms of medical condition, without debilitating side-effects” (“Medical Marijuana”). Many of the usual medicine that we take that has been prescribed to us by doctors may relieve our problems, but they come with a list of side effects which does not give the actual medicine any significance.
