The United States defeated the Spanish in the Spanish-American war. The United States liberated Cuba and other Atlantic Islands but they must make a controversial decision about whether to take the Philippines completely or they can liberate the island. America made the right choice to annex the Philippines. The Spanish previously held the islands and their rule was merciless as there rein brought only sufferance to the islands. Many european powers like Germany and France as well as a hungering Japan lurks for the islands so, if we where to liberate the Philippines would be left almost defenceless. The Philippines have many resources that big powers need like fertile growing lands, precious metals, natural water, fish, which is why a lot of neighboring nations want them. These claims don’t bring in the fact that France only helped us as they were sworn enemies of the British and only wanted to gain more influence in the Americas as and then drag the U.S into european conflicts. Also, the colonies planned out ahead of time a new government called the Democracy which was created by well educated political figures. In the Philippines the Filipino people knew very little about politics as they were enslaved under an anarchy for 500 years. Very few Filipino people even knew of another way of government other than an Anarchy so without any educated politicians in the Philippines it would’ve been close to impossible to establish any type of government there. The Philippine Islands are better off to be annexed and become a U.S colony because they will only benefit if they do as they will be under full protection of a powerful United States army as well as be rebuild and modernized by a strong United States
