“If writing is Thing, then censorship is No-Thing,” (Rushdie). Censorship takes away creativity from authors. It also takes away the power of the author to express their full imagination. Writers want to talk about creation, and censorship is anti-creation. When people are writing, they don’t like to think about what they should or shouldn’t be writing. They would rather let their imagination run free, but they cannot do that because censorship is stopping them from doing so. This transfers over to Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck’s book was censored because of the use of profanity and morbid and depressing themes. This book has been highly debated on whether it should be banned in schools.
Censorship is when a book is prohibited due to obscene behaviors. Books are often banned because of profanity, sexual themes or racial themes. Some examples of popular books that were banned or that people tried to ban include: To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies and Harry Potter. When times get tough at the end of the novel, George has no option but to shoot Lennie. The ending of the novel played a big factor of why it was banned. It wasn’t super graphic when Steinbeck explained what happened, but just the fact of what happened was what made people want to ban the book.
