Amy Tan’s story “Two Kinds” is a story about a mother and her daughter's who had a complicated relationship. And the relationship deteriorated as the mother pushes her daughter to become better at everything. At the beginning of the story, Amy gives us the impression that the mother wants her daughter to become more productive and flourish in the society. To some degree, she wants her to exceed all her expectations because she did not have the chance that her daughter has today. The mother was born and raised in China, where she had lost her mother's, her father, her first husband and her twin’s babies. The character of Ni Kan changes as the story progress because at the beginning of the story daughter is very obedient to her mother and she seemed to enjoy her mother’s intention “in fact in the beginning I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so” (600). Both mother and daughter shared the American dream and the desire for Ni Kane to become a prodigy. The mother begins to test her daughter ‘’taking her test from stories of remarkable children and other different magazines and make hard test”. Eventually, the attention and interest profoundly decrease when Ni Kan continuous fails her mother’s test and after failing the test her mother shows her disappointment. The narrator of the story tells that the mother is pushing her daughter to become a prodigy without proper encourage and motivation but rather is bullying and disappoint her. The mother did not think she is pushing her daughter and she thinks pushing her daughter would help her to be very talented throughout in her life. Mother is someone who has lost everything she once had and she does not want to look back at her previous life. The mother comes from a very strict Chinese tradition, she thinks what she is doing is right and it is best for her child. The narrator of the story which is the daughter, tells us the pressure that the mother puts on her daughter creating Constant conflict between the daughter and her mother.
