Short Constructed-Response Assessment

“Assessment is the ongoing process of gathering, analyzing and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgements to improve future student learning” (Victoria State Government n.d). While doing my 20 hours of field experience I was able to observe several different assessment techniques being utilized with in the classrooms. The techniques varied with selected-response assessments like multiple choice, fill in the blank, true and false questions, matching, and multiple response. As well as the short constructed-response assessment where the teacher would have a question and the students would have to construct the correct answer on their own. I fell with the diversity within the classroom it’s important to a variety of techniques when trying to assess students, some students might have trouble with multiple choice due to the amount of options given for the answer it might cause confusion when the student is trying to locate the correct answer, just as multiple response questions might confuse students because they are unsure if they are able to choose more than one answer. The one assessment I found that students disliked the most were short constructed-response questions, I believe part of the dislike comes from the age of the students. They are lower Elementary grade students who are still learning to read and write, so when it comes to gathering their own thoughts and writing them out it’s a little more difficult for them. I found that on occasion the computer lab was scheduled for instruction and assessment of students on math. At that particular time, there was no instruction besides the students being told what program to go into. The class was working on multiplication and the teacher said all students should know their multiplication so for the ones that don’t they pull up a program that throws random multiplication problems at them and it’s a matter of memorizing the answers because it’s based off of speed. The students who were struggling weren’t given any additional help or techniques to try and help them learn they were told to just keep doing the problems. At any point the teacher could pull up each students scores to see how they were doing and that is how the teacher would assess the students. It was the basic drill and practice which might work for some, but I personally saw some students that were struggling with
