Charles Milles Manson was born on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Manson’s mother was a teenage prostitute named Kathleen Maddox and his father was known as ‘Colonel Scott’. Kathleen wanted to give Charles a last name so she immediately married William Manson, who quickly left the picture (Roberts 30). Charles Manson’s mother committed many minor crimes, which left him to live with his religiously crazed aunt and grandmother (Brewer). Once Kathleen was out of jail, she reclaimed her son and moved to Indianapolis. She promised to provide Charlie with the best life possible, but could not keep the promise due to falling back into her old routines of liquor and men. He married a local girl named Rosaline Jean Willis, in West Virginia, after only a few months of knowing each other. She soon became pregnant with their son and Manson then fell back into stealing cars. He had been sent back to jail in Los Angeles before the baby had been born and missed the birth. In order to be closer to her husband, Rosaline moved to California (Roberts 30). Manson’s mother heard news of a grandson, Charles M. Manson Jr, and immediately moved close to Rosaline to help take care of the child. Once released in August of 1958, his mother and his wife were nowhere to be found. While in California, Manson got arrested for many accounts of car theft and pimping. Manson was convicted of forging government checks and served a ten year sentence in 1960 (Roberts 30). After being released, Manson traveled around San Francisco panhandling in the streets, singing his music, and attracting a plethora of runaways during the center of the ‘Summer of Love’. Many times in his life, Manson stated the fact that he could be more famous and bigger than the Beatles if he was given the chance. Surprisingly, Charles Manson was obsessed with the Beatles. They thought Manson was a God and would do anything he wanted. Manson tried to remove all the things he did not like about the conventional society they lived in, also known as “hang-ups”. Charles Manson was a strong believer in the race war that was beginning. “He prophesied that a race war would erupt destroying all major cities and decimating the white population, and that he would rise up from the desert to rule over the remains of the human race” (Brewer).
