Is Australia doing enough to protect its citizens from shark attacks? Let me make it clear, I am not here today to express how the culling of sharks and installation of nets around our bay has its advantages, however, I am here today to criticize the Australian and State Governments for not doing enough to protect its citizens from shark attacks which left Zac Young praying to God while his friends were left to carry the upper half of his body back to the shore after he was mauled by a tiger shark. It is clearly evident that more needs to be done to protect us. I am going to be honest with you, it is going to cost money, but how can you put a price on the 26 un provoked shark encounters and 3 fatalities that occurred in our waters last year? Sure, this would most likely reduce shark attacks in an area for a short period of time, but we need to think long term. If that money was spent in other prevention areas such as purchasing and funding the development of sonar devices known as Clever Buoys that are placed in the ocean or bay and detect all varieties of marine animals over two metres. It then alerts lifeguards and coastal authorities through a mobile phone app. Swimmers and surfers can be warned if a shark is detected close to shore and the appropriate signals and sirens can sound. Approximately 50 of these devices could be spread across a range of beaches and surf hotspots at the same price the Western Australian government is willing to spend to cull the wonderful shark species. Now just imagine if every state and territory invested into this technology, how much safer our waters would be for everyone, reducing the worry for you and your loved ones swimming at your local beach or when you travel interstate knowing there are measures in place to protect your
