The 5000 year old healing system of Ayurveda is based on the functioning of three units, namely viz three Dosha, seven Dhatu and Mala. These three units are fundamental to the proving an equilibrium of the mind, soul and body. Dosha is the physiology and psychological characteristics found in an individual, Mala is the metabolic endproduct, dhatus are the tissues present in the body.

Seven Dhatus in Ayurveda

Dhatu is a Sanskrit word which means `that which binds together’, relating to the tissues in body responsible for the functioning of the metabolism and organs, and the structure of the body.The Each Dhatu receives its nourishment from the food (digestive system), and supports sussceive tissue. Primiralily there are seven (tissues) Dhatus in the body as known in Sanskrit Saptadhatus. The study of the seven Dhatus is essential to heal the body and mind, as the Dhatus form the pillars on which the human body is constructed. The Saptadhatus are as follows:

Rasa: The primary function of the preliminary dhatu, Rasa is to circulate nutritients to every part of the body. Rasa is the juice produced by the digestive system after the food has been digested. This juice or plasma enters the bloodstream and nourishes the cells and tissues, and strengthens the blood. The juice is subsequently transformed into blood.

Rakta: Rakta literally meaning blood is serves many vital functions of the body. When the Rasa dhatu is metabolically refined, it transforms into the Rakta Dhatu. The Rakta dhatu is responsible for keeping the human body alive. The vitality of the body is ensured through the circulation of the blood, which nourishes cells and tissues. The seven dhatus are all connected to each other in a support system, affecting and influencing each other’s functioning along with their own to ensure health and wellness of the body,mind and soul.
