I have chosen to enhance conflict management/resolution skills for my self-improvement from the Nurse Manager Skills Inventory. Nurses often work in a fast-paced and stressful environment. That may explain why conflicts are frequent occurrences in heath care settings. The contextual factors, including under-staffing, poor skill mix, culture, leadership, unrealistic demands from managers, shouldn’t be ignored. Nursing is considered to be a caring profession, however, unknown to the public, there are alarming rates of incivilities happening behind the scene. They are soberingly inveterate. Despite the enormous weight, managers are not proactive enough, letting the situation become out of control (Allen et al, 2015). To make the matter worse, some managers are the actual offenders (Parker et al, 2016). This type of harmful behaviour should be dealt with strong measures. Nurse leaders need better education and training to deal with comflicts. The groundwork in conflict management should start from undergraduate education (Hendel, Fish & Galon, 2005). The junior staff, including students and new staff members are vulnerable to bullying behaviour (Parker et al, 2016). Understandably, bullying can cause distress, depression, and leaving their jobs or the profession, and have an impact on patient care (Parker et al, 2016). To prepare future leaders, ongoing nursing leadership development programmes need to be provided (Chappell & Willis, 2013). The educated visionary leaders with clinical competency will improve nurse retention for the future.(Eddy et al, 2009) Nursing leaders should be able to build a cohesive team of staff to provide quality service to clients.
