There is a strong inequality present in this problem as well, minorities who are often already at a disadvantage compared to their white classmates, are that much more dependent upon receiving an education as a way to break the chains of poverty, but it isn’t just learning, if they are not in school, they are not in an environment that is safe and constructive, therefore a suspension can be life altering (Nelson & Lind, 2015). Studies have shown it is the number-one predictor even more so than a student’s poverty level that the failure to receive an education greatly increases the likelihood of unemployment, and deviant behavior (Nelson & Lind, 2015).

It is punishable by a ticket, court appearance, and even put away in prison or a juvenile detention center. The research gives me an advantage of providing the unconstitutional wrongdoings. This is not an issue just morally wrong, it is unjust. Literature provides me with information on why courts are not taking action as well as possible solutions to endure without depending on legislators to take actions. The school-to-prison pipeline has a direct target and the literature also contributes information on who that target group is and why they are so easily targeted.

The school to prison pipeline is a phenomenon that refers to the practices and policies that have pushed school children, especially the most at-risk children, out of classrooms and into the juvenile justice system. This disturbing occurrence indicates the prioritization of incarceration over the education of children. Most alarmingly, many of the children being targeted have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect. Instead of being targeted, these children would much rather benefit from additional counseling and educational services. Moreover, the knowledge acquired in this course will be incorporated in this paper and used to explain the points made. In this term paper, what will be discussed is the expansion of the zero tolerance policy, the different views on the policy, who is mostly targeted, the effects on the juveniles and any alternative solutions that could diminish this dismaying occurrence for becoming a larger problem.
The school-to-prison pipeline is the idea that schools funnel students into the prison system. This theory is narrow-minded and ignores how the government benefits from the surveillance of African Americans. With the imagery of a pipe, this complex issue is reduced to the single-minded idea that schools force people of color, most notably African Americans, and does not discuss the evolution of the larger society. The way society has evolved to discriminate against African Americans at the institutional level is a key factor in the increased incarceration rates. The school-to-prison pipeline is an outdated and prejudiced model that does not fully explain the situation many African Americans face.
Gabbard’s (2013) application of zero tolerance policies goes hand in hand with this phenomenon known as the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP). There are many types of discrimination in the America such as racial, religious, age, disability, and sexual. As college students, discrimination will play a major role in minorities lives as they look for employment or whom they are employed with. Discrimination and the opportunities for promotion are still common even though companies create a safe place to prevent racial discrimination. Racial discrimination is one of the world’s major issues today. Many are not aware on how much it still exists everywhere. A person cannot be born racist and discriminative but only learn to become one as they grow from child to an adult.

Racism is one of the world’s major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our schools workforces, and anywhere else where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago but it sure has not gone away. Racism very much exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about the instigations and solutions to this matter. Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not but that is not the case at all. The dropout rates of young African Americans, Hispanics and other ethnic minorities are more than double the rate of whites (Petit P. 2). According to Achil Petit, recipient of the Master of Science Degree in Education Administration and Ed.D. Program in Executive Leadership, one in four of those dropouts are incarcerated every day in America (P. 1). There are many reasons behind the struggles minorities face in the education system. Yet, no issues weigh as heavily on minorities in America as race. Scholars in the United States have looked at racial issues through the lens of the Critical Race Theory, or CRT. Dating back to Brown vs. Board of Education and when the US finally decided to end segregation, the CRT is the study of how people see race (P. 5). As an ignorant form of discrimination, racism has mostly died out. Yet, the differences associated within each race and culture are are clearly visible to everyone in society. Whether or not belligerent discrimination is taking place does not effect one simple fact, America is predominately white. Why is this important? This fact has a subtle, but measurable effect on minorities. Reason being, minorities inside of American schooling structures see themselves as outside the dominant race, even to this day (29).
