People change when something bothers them inside themselves when they do not want to say it to nobody. People feel guilt inside themselves when not said what they are hiding. In the poem, torment, it states, “My guilt never leaves. The pain only deepens.” If you never let something out that is tormenting you it will let you feel guilt and torment you. For example in the novel the scarlet letter, Mr. dimmesdale left Hester Prynne on the scaffold by herself with pearl and dimmesdale felt guilty leaving them on the scaffold by themselves because he too was involved in the same situation as Hester Prynne. As the story progresses, Chillingworth changes into a monster as his need for revenge and hatred grows stronger, causing him to sin by endlessly torturing Dimmesdale. Chillingworth grows into a more menacing person as he becomes a puppet to his own hatred, sin, and obsession.

Revenge is the act of retaliating in order to get even with someone for the wrongs they have done. In the novel “The Scarlet Letter,” the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, uses Roger Chillingworth to reap revenge on Arthur Dimmesdale for his affair with his wife, Hester Prynne.
