The theme for the novel the scarlet letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is when you hide something in yourself it will torment you. People change when something bothers them inside themselves when they do not want to say it to nobody. People feel guilt inside themselves when not said what they are hiding. Revenge will help people take out what they are hiding in a way of tormenting them. In the poem, torment, it states, “My guilt never leaves. The pain only deepens.” If you never let something out that is tormenting you it will let you feel guilt and torment you. For example in the novel the scarlet letter, Mr. dimmesdale left Hester Prynne on the scaffold by herself with pearl and dimmesdale felt guilty leaving them on the scaffold by themselves because he too was involved in the same situation as Hester Prynne. Dimmesdale should of went with them so he would not feel guilt. However, people that do not want to be in the same situation that the person is which is in shame is because they do not want to ruin their reputation even though they are ruining their reputation by not confronting what they.
