Unit Two: Film Analysis: Family Case Study The movie “Save the Last Dance” was released in 2001 by most important pictures. Directed by Thomas Carter and was listed as a Drama, Music, and Romance film. It was about a white female teen named Sara Johnson who wanted to become a ballet dancer, but the death of her mother changed her dream. She moved in with her father, who she did not really know. He lived in a side of town that was mostly African American. She moves from one place to another to a new school where she is one of the few Caucasian students there. She becomes friends with an African American named Chenille, and later, falls in love with Chenille's brother, Derek who is also African American. The family structure was a single parent home consisting of Sara Johnson and father Roy Johnson. Roy is Sara man who actually caused the birth of a person. …show more content…

There are no child-care tasks because Sara is a teen and there are no other children in the home. There life is traditional male and female status roles Roy is the head of the household is the decision maker. Roy parenting style is strict, strong and self-confident but is sometimes good and sometimes not good at best based on the loss of Sara's mother. Race does play a role when Sara wants to date this young African American boy? Work and education is pushed in this household. Roy and Sara did not appear to be poor in the film. The income and area does affect a lot in the household and that's why the opportunity to get out is such a huge thing. Is there a problem with a downward ability to move around or upward ability to move around? Maintaining the current way of living didn't seem to be an issue. Education is very important in this family. This Family defines success as reaching their personal goals and overcoming life's blocking or stopping
