Being a Hispanic in America means to endure sacrifices. From the moment of finding themselves lost in America due to not knowing a specific place or being able to only speak Spanish to finding a way to support their family whether they are back home or now in America, the sacrifice begins. The stories and hardships people endure to the journey to America illegally are somewhat familiar. A Majority of Hispanic immigrants come from Mexico since it’s the only other country connected with the United States that isn’t controlled by the United States. Numerous amounts of people from all over the world come through Mexico as to why there are frequent issues with illegal immigrants finding and fighting their way. For my father, he grew up in Chicago, specifically by the Cabrini Green neighborhood in the 70s. If you wanted to find violence, join a gang, or even drugs, you came here. The Cabrini Green area was fairly large at the time since it was only 20 minutes away from Downtown. It was prominently a black community with little percentages of other ethnicities. He told me stories of him growing up in this neighborhood as one of the hardest childhood stories you’d here. Being one of the few Hispanic families in the area, specifically in the high-rise home he lived in that had risky elevators that may break on you going half way down the building or finding gangs soliciting in the hallways depending who was living on what floor of the high-rise. He would explain how at times when coming home late at night would be a hassle. He needed to avoid the police, gang members on the streets, and getting into any confrontation. Somedays, however, he was unlucky. He’d get picked on, mugged coming home for his clothes, and harassed. He ended up becoming ‘cool’ with some people, who were cool with people, and so on which ended his pour luck by a bit. The stories about him coming up and the sacrifices he endured in order to be in the position he is in today were tremendous. My story begins with me growing on the north side of Chicago in the early 2000s. To reach the point with my story, I went to a school where the majority of students were either black or Hispanic. There were very few Caucasians due to that reason. The reason why I’m heading straight to this point and not speaking on my responsibilities is due to not having several. What I did have was a paved road to a successful life as long as I kept following that road. With my grandfather and father’s sacrifices in life, and them being able to share their story with me along with their support, I’m now in a better position than most. From a young age I didn’t understand what they meant when they were trying to tell me why education is so important or why I shouldn’t be lazy considering they didn’t finish their education how they wanted. Instead, they both made sacrifices that costed them their education, that costed their time, their blood and sweat, their time away from family while providing for family. There was a time when that all finally clicked for me, when I finally realized what position I needed to be in to make sure I didn’t disappoint them. If I could say what sacrifices I’ve made in my lifetime so far to make sure theirs weren’t for nothing, is making the decision to keep continuing my education. They both want me to have a successful career, and so do I for the reason that I don’t want to be in their positions
