As a senior, I knew that it was time to apply for college. SLU and many other colleges were among my choices. What was hard was determining which school would be right for me. After months of thinking and discussing with my parents, I decided to attend Saint Louis University. A big reason why I decided to attend SLU is based on its Jesuit mission. The mission is all about providing a balanced college experience to each and everyone of the students. I wondered how SLU’s Jesuit mission would impact my experience at the university.
My goal is to become a successful doctor; I am currently majoring in Biochemistry. One of my hopes is to learn and understand the natural and medical sciences and be able to apply these science concepts in the real world. I want to be the best in what I am studying and pursuing so for me, it is important to receive opportunities and a valuable education that would make me successful in the future. In high school, I devoted 400 hours helping senior citizens with their smartphones and tablets. At SLU, I want to receive many opportunities to help the campus and the community. My friends who attend different universities tell me that the goal of service is the just get the hours. I do not believe in that. The purpose of doing service is to help others and solve problems. I believe service is crucial in my life because it is an opportunity to help people, interact with them, and make the world a better place. Service also connects with my goal of improving my leadership skills. I want to become more involved with students and faculty. The main component I look for in college is their commitment to further my studies. I feel this college will provide an ingenious culture within the science field, therefore rendering myself with the building blocks necessary to later pursue the medical field. Not only does UNCW devote itself towards their student’s undergraduate years, but also by providing Professional pathways such as Pre-Medicine, students such as myself can go into Professional schools better prepared. In addition to my interest in the academics the school has to offer, I also marvel at the amount of extracurricular activities available to the student body. An HBCU is a college/university that embeds the nature of power and black excellence; a place with surroundings that doesn’t force you, but makes you want to push yourself to become a better person inside and out, and throughout the community. Transferring would allow myself to be put in an atmosphere of continuous motivation and growth that I would feed off of my superiors and the people around me.
I believe that being able to assist others is a positive part of life that we all endure. Although we sometimes view service as unnecessary work, it gives me a sense of pride knowing I’m able to volunteer in my community. Being around people who are willing to work hard has affected my life by motivating me to view service as something that will benefit not only the community, but myself and my views on life as well. I equate service with helpfulness—assisting others. I help both my school community by answering questions and giving feedback and my community as a whole through my volunteer activities, the most enjoyable of which has been Habitat for Humanity.
I told someone when I was younger that I wanted to cure people. 4 years ago, I told one of my teachers I wanted to find the best school that would allow me to do that. A year ago, I went to Wayne State and I found it, my major and my school. Being interested in science and math has been a major component in my studies and choosing a career path. Devoting time to helping and working with others doing volunteer work makes the decision a whole lot better. Majoring in Pharmacy is the right path and Wayne State University will give me the best chance at following that path.
My lifetime goal is helping others and I plan to use my career to fulfill it. The classes I’m taking right now and the ones I’m planning to take senior year are classes I believe will influence my decision in my college major/career as well as counting toward my GPA. This will help me get into schools who have medical programs that I’m considering. Also, taking AP classes can help me save money since I can earn college credit. I’m taking all AP classes, and the electives I’m taking have been classes that have helped me consider being in the medical field. I’ve found that over the years, science and math are what I’m doing better in versus history and english. I believe by being in the medical field, I can help others in the best way I can.
I am a dedicated, focused student looking to push the boundaries of Engineering Physics with creative out of the box thinking. I have the drive to be successful and positively represent UBC Engineering Physics. I have a passion for physics and math which is why I believe this program is so appealing and a perfect choice. Having already started, run and sold a successful landscaping company, I have experience in entrepreneurship and have determined being an entrepreneur is something I want to pursue in the future. How did a departmental faculty generated 12,000 hours of student community service in one semester? The following is a qualitative analysis of conversations with faculty members in a department that recently instituted a service learning requirement for all student majors. The campus is a large urban comprehensive university with a multi-ethnic student body. Approximately fifteen faculty members were interviewed for this study. While most of those interviewed included service learning components in their courses, interviews with faculty members who resisted or refused to incorporate service learning were conducted as well in order to understand varying faculty attitudes towards service learning.
There are always some activities for the betterment of a community. If we get involved ourselves in those, we will certainly have some useful experiences in our life too. Service Learning is one of those activities, and it is primarily a service of a community with the application of the knowledge and guidance obtained in the college. Moreover, Service Learning is a way for a student to practice the education that he learns from the college, which in result strengthens the student academically. My interest in medicine began the first time I (intentionally) held lethal bacteria. Mycobacterium marinum causes incurable granulomas in zebrafish. To me, however, this microbe also represents a vital step in my career path. Prior to studying M. marinum, I captured phages without testing their therapeutic potential. M. marinum thus provides my first chance to treat a disease in vivo.
There are numerous reasons why universities should incorporate service learning into their curriculum. One way that service learning is so beneficial to college curriculums is that it will cheapen the price of credit hours. Catholic Education is one of the most efficacious decisions in human lives. Though countless people will debate that public education is more valuable as it may come at a lesser cost, in truth, it may cost even more than a Private Catholic College just not in the way that the world believes. In life, only one particular truly matters: loving the Lord and spending eternity with Him. Consequently, in true Catholic Colleges, this is the priority for their students not solely making money or educating their students so they may be shoved into the workforce.
I want to be able to provide guidance and support, as well as fun opportunities such as the Freshmen Flotilla and Bedtime Stories, in order to foster a sense of community amongst students and faculty. I have noticed that many of my friends that I lived with the Honors dorm who moved to live off campus have become disconnected with the community of the Honors College, and I would love to make an impact by keeping older students involved.
