First, the crisis management team (CMT) must convene to begin the formal process to a crisis (Crandall, Parnell & Spillan, 2013). After the team is convened, the crisis is assessed and the situation is evaluated to determine what the reaction will entail. When food is in the crisis, it is important to minimize the potential harm to life by assessing the situation correctly. In March of 2016, Bumble Bee Foods, INC. voluntarily recalled three specific UPC codes, due to the potential illness leading to death (Bumble Bee Team, 2016). If Bumble Bee Foods would have not recalled the tuna, the potential loss of life could have been much worse by leaving the tuna in circulation. Once the decision is made on what direction the CMT will take, the team will communicate, monitor, delegate, prioritize and execute the plan (Crandall, Parnell & Spillan, 2013). When these steps are followed the crisis can be neutralized and damage control can be accomplished. An example of a crisis that caused problem and did not create damage control was Cadbury's worm infested candy bars in 2003. The company did not take responsibility first by stating the infestation could not have happened in the manufacturing process (Bhasin, 2011). The FDA disagreed and the two entities began to argue over how the infestation occurred. This decision created a public relation nightmare for Cadbury. Although the company finally owned up to the problem and the educational advertising increased their sales by taking ownership of the problem. Equifax had a data breach in 2017 that may affect 143 million people (Gressin, 2017). Equifax took responsibility immediately and searched for help to resolve the issue. By providing the consumers a identity monitoring program, the company was able to contain the damage to one of three important credit bureaus.
