Ruby Bridges was a young African American girl who faced many hardships. Ruby was the first ever African American to go to an all white school in New Orleans in 1966. A brave young girl in order to go to school was escorted by the U.S. marshals. Demonstrated bravery even though she was ostracized, threatened, and surrounded. First, Ruby was ostracized by students at her school they would bully her and call her names. African americans were already treated badly but she was the only one at the school of whites. Abon Bridges (Ruby's father) was fired from his job because his boss did want to have the father of the black girl going to the school of whites to work for him. Jennie Wade was the only civilian to die in the battle of Gettysburg. Jennie Wade was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and died there just twenty short years later. The battle of Gettysburg was then known as one of the bloodiest battles in the American civil war. This caused a single civilian to lose their life, Jennie Wade was that person to die at Gettysburg. Many other civilians died in the war itself, but only she died at Gettysburg.
Growing up, Ruth had a rough childhood growing up in a very strict jewish household. Her family was poor, her mother was physically handicapped, her father was verbally and physically abusive, and she faced prejudice and discrimination from her neighbors and classmates because she

Lucy Stone was born in West Brookfield, Massachusetts on August 13, 1818. Her parents, Francis Stone and Hannah Matthews, were abolitionists and Congregationalists. Stone retained their anti-slavery opinions but rejected the Congregationalist Church after it criticized abolitionists. Along with her anti-slavery attitude, Lucy Stone also pursued a higher education. She completed local schools at the age of sixteen and saved money until she could attend a term at Mount Holyoke Seminary five years later. In 1843, Stone enrolled at the Oberlin Collegiate Institute (later Oberlin College). With her graduation in 1847, she became the first Massachusetts woman to earn a bachelor’s degree. However, Lucy Stone was not done expressing her abolitionist and feminist beliefs to the public (anb.org).
Lily was raised in an extremely racist environment with T. Ray in Sylvan. Her mother figure and her best friend was harassed just is walking down the street. Even the church folks who claim to love but I guess African-Americans didn’t count. Also she had to break Rosaleen, the woman who played the mother figure in her life, out of jail.
As African-Americans, she could of not enjoy her life like her white friends. She would be often be pick on because her skin color. In high school, she was sexually harassed by her own stepfather. Luckily, she has been a strong independent woman with a strong mindset for working hard to get what she want. Moody had grow up facing all the problems in the south. Many Africans Americans have very low to no education of their own rights, and often they are not able to use their rights. So many of them had been quiet and just accepted the random death and false charge. Black farmers in the south often not able to produce food and good enough to make a good living because they are sharecroppers and the owner of the land just take most of goods away. Other problem for blacks, they are often kill, burned, lynched, and beaten for crime that they did not commit. Many of Moody’s family member, classmate, and friends was killed. Whites wanted blacks to fear them in order to keep them in the lower level as they were slaves. Police in the south often not trying to protect blacks. In the black community there are another class called “yellow”. They judge and look down on other black people. For example, Miss Pearl, Anne’s new grandmother. Racial inequality was a big thing back in the day, as the blacks were oppressed, discriminated and killed. The blacks did not get fair treatment as the whites, they were always been looked down, mocked, and terrified. But Moody knew there’s still an opportunity to change the institution through Civil Rights Movement. As she matured Anne Moody come to a conclusion that race was created as something to separate people, and there were a lot of common between a white person and a black person. Moody knew sexual orientation was very important back in the 1950s, there was little what women can do or allowed to do in the society. For example, when Moody was ridiculed by her activist fellas in Civil Rights Movement. Women indeed played an important role in Moody’s life, because they helped forming her personality development and growth. The first most important woman in Moody’s life would be her mother, Toosweet Davis. Toosweet represent the older rural African American women generation, whom was too terrified to stand up for their rights. She was portrayed as a good mother to Moody. She struggled to make ends meet, yet she did everything she could to provide shelter and food to her children. Toosweet has encouraged Moody to pursue education. However, she did not want Moody to go to college because of the fear of her daughter joining the Civil Rights Movement and getting killed. The second important woman to Moody would be Mrs. Burke, She is the white woman Moody worked for. Mrs. Burke is a fine example of racist white people, arguably the most racist, destructive, and disgusting individual. In the story, Mrs. Burke hold grudge and hatred against all African American. Growing up as a teenager, Melba Pattillo Beals had to fight one of the most courageous wars in history. No, not a war that took place in the trenches of a battlefield, but a war that took place in the halls of an American high schoola war against color. Melba was one of nine black students who was involved in one of the most important civil rights movements in American history. These nine black students, known as the Little Rock Nine, were the first to attend the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 4, 1957. This was a major turning point for blacks all across the United States and opened the way for other blacks to begin attending white schools. Melba managed to survive her days at Central High School and wrote about her extraordinary "battles" and experiences in her autobiography, Warriors Don't Cry.
Ruby taught schools around the world to let schools let blacks and whites go to the same schools . Ruby started at Willam Frantz school . But what she did spread to other schools . Ruby was so helpful to schools she inspired an artist to paint a picture of her .Ruby inspired many people . Ruby now goes back to that school and reads and teaches at her old school reading stories and especially the story she wrote
Because of the laws against colored people, Rosaleen, as a black woman, lives with constraints in her life. For example, she cannot live in a house with white people (Kidd, p.8), she cannot represent Lily at the charm school (Kidd, p.19), or even travel in a car with white people (Kidd, p.76). The media is also influenced by racism, and constantly shows news about segregation such as the case of Martin Luther King, who is arrested because he wants to eat in a restaurant (Kidd, p.35), the “man in Mississippi was killed for registering to vote” (Kidd, p.44), and the motel in Jackson, that closes, because the owners don’t want to rent rooms to black people (Kidd, p.99).... ... middle of paper ...
Ruby Bridges’ family moved from Mississippi to New Orleans in 1960. As a result of that she had to attend a whole new school for first grade, William Frantz Elementary. But that is the least of Ruby’s worries, and the reason is because Ruby is the first African American to attend an all white school. She had to face angry mobs and parents who did not want their children in school with her.

The History that goes by through the course of this book is an odd combination of racism, social reform, and close mindedness. In Ruth’s upbringing the hardships of being a Jew in a Christian land is a prevalent part of how she grew up. She was feared by the dark skinned people, and shunned by the light skinned for being Jewish, leaving her all alone. Meanwhile, James grew up in a world where he was hated for being black, and confused as to who he was, was he black or was he white. These struggles took place during the time of both the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights movement. Ruth McBride even stays in Bronx in the heart of the Harlem Renaissance. James McBride grew to have his very own brothers and sisters becoming civil rights activists. One of his siblings even became a Black Panther, a black power party. It exemplifies the struggles in his life by bringing that very same struggle to someone whom he saw every day.
Discrimination and prejudice were very common acts in the early and middle 1900's. Prejudice in this book is displayed by the acts of hate and misunderstanding because of someone's color. People of color were the majority that were treated unfairly. During this time in the southern states, black people had to use separate bathrooms, drinking fountains, sections in restaurants, churches, and even go to separate schools. Although much of the discrimination was directed towards blacks, there were plenty of accounts towards impoverished families by those that had money. Discrimination is prevalent when people that are different are called names. Some people thought blacks were automatically dumb because of their color. They weren't allowed to do anything but menial tasks (such as chopping wood) and hard labor because they were thought too dumb.
