William Shakespeare is a widely considered writer and greatest playwright in the English language. Romeo and Juliet is one of his most famous plays, a story of two star crossed lovers who die due to the two families’ feud. The balcony scene in Act2 Scene2 is also known as one of the most recognizable and memorable scenes in all of literature. After Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet’s ball, they instantly fall in love. Romeo later hides in the Capulet’s orchard and overhears Juliet speak her emotions, he learns of her love for him. Juliet doesn’t know that Romeo is listening to her until he speaks aloud, nobody knows that the two lovers meet.
This scene links two main plot events where Romeo and Juliet exchange vows and confess their love to each other and foreshadows the haste with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship to come. The obstacles that the two lovers have to face begin in this scene. The mood is sneaky, romantic, and curious, leaving the audience hanging and nervous yet excited. The mood is created when Romeo describes Juliet’s beauty. The point of view in Romeo and Juliet is written in a first person point of view. The audience and readers had an insight on the character’s thoughts, they knew everything that happened.
Shakespeare used figures of speech and imagery to make the readers enjoy the play and imagine it. An example of personification: “Her vestal livery is but sick and green” (Shakespeare) when Romeo compares Juliet’s beauty to the sun and says the moon (representing darkness) looks sick and green because it is jealous of her. An example of a metaphor: “But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks?” (Shakespeare) Romeo says this line when he sees Juliet at her window. “It is the east,...

...infatuated immature young man in love. Romeo’s obsessive love for Juliet drove him to Juliet’s house, listening and watching her. He knew he could get in trouble, yet he still went to see her despite the consequences he would face if anybody found out; which shows he is also a fearless, courageous rebel who took risks. Romeo is also desperate, emotional and impatient; he would do anything to be with Juliet. Juliet is describes as an angel from heaven, a beautiful girl who everyone and everything, even the moon was jealous of her.
The balcony scene in Act2, Scene 2 is the most famous excerpt in Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare wrote this excerpt using imagery, figures of speech, with a romantic mood, describing the characters Romeo and Juliet. This excerpt is my favorite in the whole play because of the beautiful, romantic mood and words that Romeo recites.
