Have you ever felt the rushing wind on your face while spiraling through the air? Well if so, then you have probably been on a roller coaster. This October was the first time that I have been on a roller coaster. Traveling with a group of friends, went to the Haunt Night at Worlds of Fun. It was quite an thrilling experience. There were zombies and goblins prowling around, waiting to give you a scare. When we were on our way I was nervous, but excited. As we all trudged up, Keeshawn, Paige, Makenna, Cooper, Katie, and I went to the first ride, The Patriot. While we take the walk up to the Patriot I started to feel anxious, Paige, Keeshawn and I are waiting for our turn. Once that was over, we walked into the sinister house. There wasn’t much room in the house so Paige and I walked side by side while Makenna was behind us. Throughout the beginning of the petrifying house every corner there was someone trying to scare me. The room we were in started to get dark and that got me frightened. Nothing bad happened, but in the room upcoming had those dazzling flashing lights. The lights were blinding and gave me a headache. When we were at this part of the haunted house, it was a struggle to walk through because of the harsh lights in my eyes. Fortunate for us that section wasn’t too long. Following the lights part the lasting haunted house’s time was coming to an end. The house wasn’t extremely scary subsequent of the lights part. Finally it came to an end and the journey in a haunted house was over. Later, when we all met up, there were stories to tell of those events that occurred just before. We all shared a few laughs. Then everyone wanted to go on another roller coaster, so we decided to go on the Patriot again. This time I knew what was coming so I wasn’t as scared like last time. Just after that we had to leave Worlds of Fun. The crisp sound of the loud yell from the people on those rides were boisterous, even when we left the park. If I had a chance to go again, I would definitely take that
Every year an estimated 290 million people all over the world flock to amusement and theme parks to experience the thrills and excitement of the modern day roller coaster. (Boldurian 16). Now thousands of people a day can safely experience the G-forces that an astronaut or fighter pilot would experience in flight. "The Revolution" a roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia California gives riders an amazing 4.9 Gs; that is 1.5 more than an astronaut at launch. (Boldurian 16). These G-forces create thrills and fear and excitement in all who ride them. But the truth is that there is no reason to fear. Roller Coasters are exceptionally safe. The mortality rate for roller coasters is one in 90 million, and most of the fatality occurred due to failure to follow safety guidelines. (Boldurian 17). But roller coasters have not always been this safe. One of the first coaster attractions was actually just a mine rail designed to bring coal to the base of the mountain (Lemelson-MIT Program). The attraction was a thirty minute ride, with speeds of more than one-hundred miles per hour. As time went on entrepreneurs in the late 1800's began creating “quick buck cheap thrill attractions.” These early coasters lacked safety for the sake of thrills. This changed when John A. Miller engineer and roller coaster designer began making coasters. John Miller held over 100 patents many of which were for roller coaster safety and functionality that are still used today (Lemelson-MIT Program). John Miller's inventions and improvements to the roller coaster make him the father of the modern roller coaster that we know today.
It was the summer of 2012 and my family was taking another trip to Six Flags Great America. Earlier that summer we went just for me to be disappointed. At the time I wasn’t 54 inches yet and couldn’t ride any of the rides that I wanted to because they were the most popular at the amusement park. But, I hit a growth spurt between trips and we planned to ride all of the big rollercoasters. The one that I was most terrified of at the time was Raging Bull, one of the tallest, fastest, and longest steel coasters in the US. As we started to wait in line for the ride I was shaking with both anticipation and fear and began to rethink my idea to ride the rollercoaster. I decided to stay in line and see what many people thought was a great coaster.
I stepped in and was shook by the loud music that was playing, now I can’t even hear myself think. As i walked through, the tension grew greater every time I turned a creepy corner, where I thought someone was waiting to scare me out of my skin. Most of the time though, there were people dressed up as fiction characters screaming in my face making me jump. It felt like this went on forever as there were so many twists and turns to walk through. Then, we went through a part of the house that used some sort of inflatable which pushed on both sides of you. Me, scared of what's to come, I ended up crawling on the ground. This was much worse than walking because the ground was made up of rocks. As we reached the end of the walk-through I could see the light which was a huge relief. When I got out, it wasn’t where I came from, it was a door to another haunted house. Why many people pay to go back to where they just got scared is unusual, but there is an actual reason for this allure of fear when being scared over and over again. Roller coasters come in all sizes and configurations. Roller coasters are designed to be intense machines that get the riders’ adrenaline pumping. Ever since my first roller coaster ride, I knew I was hooked. I cannot get enough of the thrilling sensation caused by these works of engineering. When people board these rides, they put their faith in the engineers who designed the rides and the people who maintain and operate the rides. In this paper, I will bring to your attention a specific instance when the operation of one of these coasters came into question and led to a very tragic incident. From this, I will look into the events leading up to the incident and evaluate the decisions made by the people involved.
Rollercoasters, the star of an amusement park and an achievement in physics, date back decades. In history there is no doubt that people created countless of amazing coasters. They could be record holders, they could do the impossible or they could inspire the design of many other rollercoasters. Rollercoasters is a way to express physical science while providing safe (if designed correctly) amusement to all.
People can be very wild when it comes to amusement parks and their widespread excitement. Although if you think about it, roller coasters and amusement parks are one of many examples of how physics is used. To make an amazing and exciting amusement park, workers have to use their physical knowledge to bring out the best of their out of each of their rides. After all, the roller coaster excitement about riding a roller coaster is not about their high speed. What makes a roller coaster excited is mostly due to their acceleration and the feeling of weightlessness.

But there’s no magic involved with these fantastic creations, there’s a plethora of forces and laws governing their every movement. From kinetic energy to inertia, roller coasters are intricate engineering marvels that function through the laws of physics. This is a look into those physics that result in a thrill ride unlike any other.
Not far from the opening gate, I glanced at the first ride I was going to experience, the Cork Screw. The whole entire family was going to ride on the rollercoaster, even my sister Alissa who is terrified of coasters. As I walked up the narrow path that led to the Cork Screw, I could see that there was a large number of people waiting to get onto the ride. While waiting patiently to board the coaster, I gazed up in awe at the Cork Screw, one of the newer roller coasters, which sparkled high above our heads. What most people expect to hear is me looking forward to riding the roller coasters. I hope that’s not what you thought because I hate them, maybe not hate, but really I’m just not a big fan of high altitudes in general. A roller coaster consists of connected cars that move on tracks due to gravity and momentum. Believe it or not, an engine is not required for most of the ride. It all began when a couple of friends and myself went to Six Flags for some fun right at the beginning of summer. We arrived there early in morning, which was about nine o’clock for us. Your friends have to practically convince you to change your mind in matter 30 seconds. At this point you can hear your own heart beating in your ears. Everyone seems to vanish and the only thing that you can see is the seat of the roller coaster that has sweat on it due to the previous rider whose nerves got the best of him. There is no turning back now and you have no choice but to get on the ride. Sitting on the ride, waiting for the ride to begin is the most heart wrenching part. I have always been fascinated by carnival rides. It amazes me that average, ordinary people eagerly trade in the serenity of the ground for the chance to be tossed through the air like vegetables in a food processor. It amazes me that at some time in history someone thought that people would enjoy this, and that person invented what must have been the first of these terrifying machines. For me, it is precisely the thrill and excitement of having survived the ride that keeps me coming back for more.
