Out here being a Hero A tragic hero is a “a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat”. In the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby exemplerated the characteristics of a hero. Gatsby was someone who wowed many with his smile, noble status, and died in heroic actions. Gatsby was someone who had a great smile. He was known to many by his “superhero” power which was his smile. “It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it”(28). His smile made you “believe in yourself” (Fitzgerald 28) it made you feel special and wanted. Every Time they saw him they would think “there's that smile again” (Fitzgerald 41). Gatsby was seen as a hero from going from nothing to super rich. Gatsby was supposed to inherited the money from Dan Cody but the “twenty-five thousand dollars. He didn’t get” (Fitzgerald 58). After, Dan Cody died he never saw the money and never understood the “legal device used against him”(58). He then became “some big bootlegger”(Fitzgerald 62) the people during this time that because newly rich are involved in illegal businesses. He now lives across the bay from Daisy. Gatsby was together with Daisy before he went off to war and then found out she was getting together with Tom. Gatsby tried everything in his power to win her back he bought a house across the bay from her and became rich so she would fall in love with him again. Gatsby was trying to win her love so much he “dismissed every servant” (Fitzgerald 114) just because Daisy didn't like them. Gatsby was wowed when “she got up and went to Gatsby and pulled his face down, kissing him on the mouth” (Fitzgerald 116) but Daisy was still with Tom and was in the Gatsby's car when they hit Myrtle.
