In the past women did not know a lot about their own body besides that if you are a woman then you were made to bear children. It was not till later on that women really took the initiative to learn about their own bodies. “ For women throughout the centuries, ignorance about our bodies has had one major consequence- pregnancy” (BWHBC 1973 p. 447). For this consequence, sometimes the only option that they felt they had was abortion. The fight for the right to have legal abortions has been going on for decades. This issue has been an issue all over the world not just in the United States of America. Women on the other side of the world from the United States fought for legalizing abortions in the 1970’s. They decided to tell their stories because they were hoping that it would bring the subject of abortion to light. The women then did, what pro-choice people do today which is that they organized protest and rallies in order to bring awareness to the subject ( N.a. 1981). The major breakthrough in legalizing abortion is the 1973 court case of Roe V. Wade. Roe V. Wade was the controversial court case about abortion. Norma McCorvey was a resident in Texas who wanted to obtain an abortion, but Texas had a law that prohibited abortions except needing it to save the mother’s life (CNN Library 2017) According to CNN Library (2017), “ the case is filed by Norma McCorvey, known in court documents as Jane Roe against Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County from 1951 to 1987, who enforced a Texas law that prohibited abortion except to save a woman’s life.” The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Roe to legalize abortions no matter the reason behind it. Norma, however, has changed sides on the debate of abortions. “In 1997, McCorvey started Roe No More, a pro-life outreach organization that was dissolved in 2008” (CNN Library 2017).
