Robert Burns was a Scottish poet who gained the right to be known as the national poet of Scotland. He earned this title by the many poems he wrote throughout his lifetime. Burns is also referred to as the pre-romantic poet because of his sensitivity to nature, his feelings and emotions used in his work, and individualism. A poem that Burns wrote that resembles some of these aspects is A Red, Red Rose. Although Burns prospered a little later in life, as a child he grew up in the less privileged class. Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759 in Alloway, Scotland. He was the son of William and Agnes Burns. Growing up, he worked on a farm like his father and he did not enjoy it. Instead of working as a farmer his whole life he became a poet and toward the end of his life he became a tax collector. Growing up, his family was not fortunate enough to be a very wealthy family. The person he is speaking to in this poem is someone who he loves and cares about. He uses the words “my bonnie lass” which is just another saying for someone who is beautiful or attractive. He also uses the phrase “seas gang dry” which means until all of the seas go dry. The three literary devices he used was imagery, simile, and repetition. He used imagery by saying “my Luve’s like a Red, Red Rose, that’s newly sprung in June”. This is trying to help give a visual picture of the rose and how it just bloomed to show how pure his love is. He also uses a simile in this line when he says, “my Luve’s like a Red, Red Rose.” He is comparing the love he has for her to a red rose. Lastly, he used repetition. He used repetition by saying “Till a’ the seas gang dry” and this is using repetition to emphasize his love. He is expressing that he will love her
