Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning married when he was thirty-four and she was forty. Although they were only married for fifteen years before Elizabeth’s death, their affections for each other were as true in the beginning of their courtship as the affection of a couple who have been married for fifty years. Elizabeth’s magnificent Sonnets from the Portuguese shows this love for each other, most famously depicted in the forty-third sonnet, which begins with the line, “How do I love thee?
