In this essay i will be discussing my experience of the Frank Auerbach London building sites exhibition at somerset house in reference to carol duncans essay the art museum as a ritual, focusing on the idea that the experience of the art museum even though seemingly secular and so adjunct from religion, has ritualistic elements that are comparable to those of much older ceremonial practices and buildings.
I begin by addressing this initial assessment based on the facade of the museum, and its surroundings which are key to this sense of escapism from the mundanity of the everyday world, and entry into a realm of enlightenment i.e. the art museum. which we feel we are elevated to a heightened sense of being or understanding, whereby we enter a state. this is prevalent from the outset as my entry into somerset house is through a grand archway which leads me into a spacious courtyard, each side abound with neo classically designed architecture, physically and metaphorically symbolising my transference into a different realm. this is supported by Duncan highlighting ' Like most ritual space, museum space is carefully marked off and culturally designated as reserved for a special quality of attention-in this case contemplation and learning.'
i could already tangibly sense a shift in my perceptions in coherence to my setting, and i was very aware as a result that my mindset was no longer adhered to the worldly concerns, but that of a state of contemplation. I believe that my experience of the Auerbach exhibition at Somerset is indicative of Carol Duncan's belief that 'art museums are complex entities in which both art and architecture are parts of a larger whole.'
I say this because I feel that the preparations and transference to a contemplative mindset was initiated by my initial adherence to the Neo-classical architecture that confronted me as I entered the museum site. Thus allowing me to fully immerse myself in the artwork, and thereby enter a state of liminality. Hence i feel that the sum of these factors was conducive to the overall experience and that each part was integral to it.

How people can find deeper meanings from paint on a canvas is Japanese to me. When I look at a painting I see exactly what is being shown and nothing more. There is no deeper meaning evident. Being at this museum cranky and solo trying to find a picture I felt connected to was almost impossible. It took me about ten minutes to go through the whole museum. For the first cultural event, I decided to visit the Orlando Museum of Art. Personally, I had never been to an art museum until now so I wasn’t sure what the art would like. I never had an interest to go to an art museum or an interest for art in general because it is very uninteresting in my opinion. I felt like I didn’t belong in the art world. I felt like art was meant for intelligent individuals who understood complex art and the intentions behind a piece of art. Even if I tried to understand art, I was always very critical of it because I never understood what makes art “art” and why it is so important to others. By touring the Orlando Museum of Art, I was hoping to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding for art.
Many might have been working on Good Friday, but many others were enjoying The Frist Museum of Visual Arts. A museum visitor visited this exhibit on April 14, 2017 early in the morning. The time that was spent at the art museum was approximately two hours and a half. The first impression that one received was that this place was a place of peace and also a place to expand the viewer’s imagination to understand what artists were expressing to the viewers. In all, both the Glasgow Art Building and the Goldman-Schwartz Art Building have a surprising number of similarities. Although they are located on two different continents, the styles are remarkably similar especially considering their function. Their similar goals to promote creativity by designing an open and free environment are perhaps, the most significant and interesting features of the structures. By comparing these features, it gives an indication of the serious dedication to art that has existed across the world regardless of history.

As the purpose of the building changed, each room addressed new functions with new requirements. The Met looked towards the South Kensington Museum (Victoria and Albert) and the “ideal role model” due to its extensive collections and international reputation (Heckscher, 1995). When designing museums, architects strived to create monuments that “prepare and educate the mind of the visitor (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998).” Education is an essential function of a museum. Acquiring, preserving, and properly displaying materials, permits a museum to fulfill this duty (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998). For instance, lighting is a factor that affects the manner in which artwork is viewed and can be properly appreciated. When determining the proper lighting for the Louvre, Comte d’Angiviller, strongly believed that natural, overhead lighting was the most effective solution (McClellan, 1994, p. 72). The same determination impacted the decision to add skylights at the Met. During the initial phase, architects Vaux and Mould, added skylights to the upper floor, and windows to the lower floor that provided a natural light solution (Heckscher, 1995). As we reach the museum, the exterior was very beautiful. The first things I saw were the bronze statues in the front. We took a couple of pictures in front of them and in front of the Norton Simon. The entrance where the glass doors had sat was very unique and elegant. The glass walls that the glass doors were attached to, added to the elegance and beauty. When I had first walked in, I was very shy, timid, and unwilling to go on, this was due to the more mature audience that I had seen when I had first entered the museum. I was still unsure on how to act in a museum, being this my first time, so I was very calm, cool and reserved, but as time went on I saw college students my age probably doing the same thing I was doing. So I then I felt more at ease. Plus my girlfriend was with me so I was not alone.

As Nuttgens eloquently expressed, architecture is a “vital…expression of the experience of mankind.” It is more than just buildings used for storage, housing, religious purposes, simple functionality; it is a great manifestation of the commonality of man, the great connecting factor of humankind.
