Gay Valedictorian Denied Speech Opportunity Gives It On Television Evan Young was the valedictorian at Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School in Longmont, Colorado. He was supposed to give the commencement speech on May 16th, but when the school administration found out that he was going to use his speech to come out as gay they told him to rewrite the speech. He said that he took out other parts that the school disapproved of, but would not take remove the part of his coming out. The school refused to recognize Young as the valedictorian, and also called his parents, possibly inadvertently outing the teen before he was ready. On Thursday, Evan was flown to the Comedy Central studios and given the opportunity to give an abridged version of his speech on Larry Wilmore's “The Nightly Show”. Wilmore started things out with typical humor, “You can't shout out, you cant come out, next thing their going to want you to wear pants under those robes.” He then let him give his speech as the …show more content…
Young adjusted and continued, “In the words of one of my heroes, Larry Wilmore,” and he was allowed to continue. Wilmore told him that since it was TV he could only give an abridged version of the message, but that the whole transcript would be placed on the web site. Young quickly got to the point, mentioned that he was gay, stated that “we can still be friends even if we profoundly disagree with each other”, and encouraged everyone to hug each other. He received a great round of applause from the audience. According to Democracy Now!, Evan also gave his message at an Out Boulder fundraiser with an audience of hundred that included politicians. Colorado Congressman Jared Polis, the first openly gay member of Congress to become a parent, congratulated him for his
In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.
A fresh recruit to a discarded system is Mr. Jaime Escalante. In the film, Stand and Deliver, he had to adapt in his environment in James A. Garfield High School when, without prior notice, he was assigned to teach Mathematics instead of Computer. Quickly, as he set foot in the classroom, he had, most probably, a better discernment in human behavior. The reality of the high school he was employed in, he understood and tried to completely remove the universal gap between a traditional teacher and a disregarded student.
A town, a team, a dream. Friday Night lights document the 1988 football season of Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. Bissinger explores the various themes of the novel and uses conceit to colorfully describe the contrasting attitudes towards sports and academics. In the small town of Odessa bases Fridays nights in the fall are dedicated to Permian football. As a result of the obsessive attitude towards football a ridiculous amount of pressure is thrusted upon the coaches and players. Bissinger tackled the many problems in the town such as extreme pressure to perform, racism, and the relationship between parent and child. While Bissinger had several preconceived notions, he was ultimately proven wrong and through analysis of themes and incorporation of comparisons in the form of conceits he was able to develop his understanding of the town and accurately depict the events that transpired.
South Park is an animated TV series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, which first aired on Comedy Central in 1997. The show features four boys Eric Cartman, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Kenny McCormick. South Park has been seen as one of the most controversial shows due to its raunchy humor and obscene depiction of characters in the show. South Park deals with many current issues in the news surrounding anything from in politics to religion. In dealing with these issues South Park involves adult comedy that parodies current issues going on in the United States and around the world. South Park also uses many other rhetorical deceives, such as
To the members of the support group Naïve People who are Addicted to Mass media and Believe Anything They Hear or Read Anonymous my purpose of being here today is to help you better understand how to analyze the mass media you come across. Mass media is the news, newspapers, magazines, the radio, and the television. The way I’m going to analyze it, is by rhetorical analysis. Rhetoric is how effective the writer is in persuading the reader by using speech and compositional techniques. In order for you to be able to become more apprehensive when reading information, I will be analyzing the ad for Vitaminwater featuring Kobe Bryant. Vitaminwater was introduced in 1996. It is a mineral water that is given out by Energy Brands. Like many sports drinks they use famous athletes to speak for them and promote them. Vitaminwater’s ad with Kobe Bryant is successful because it persuades people to buy their product because it’s, “The Most Valuable Power.”
Congressman Murphy and Senator Gillibrand advocated their individual agendas and fought for what they believed in, reminding fellow members of Congress of the problem that was defined by Obama on the campaign trail. The interest groups that had supported President Obama helped him secure the LGBT vote in his victory, and demanded his follow-through in governing. And although many media organizations put out editorials endorsing a repeal of DADT, the objective journalism was more important in accurately reporting that President Obama was suddenly gun-shy about his campaign promise, leaving many bewildered. The statistic was that nearly 13,000 homosexual people were discharged from military service because of DADT, and media accounts turned that statistic into real stories of people and interest groups that wanted a change. By objectively focusing on the sheer impact of DADT and the story on the ground as the institutional leaders were putting it off, the media fought for the truth. The outside factors of interest groups and the media, along with the couple members of Congress serving as inside players, continued to shape the path of a possible DADT repeal in its stagnant period. These forces proved to be most important in these beginning stages of agenda setting and policy formulation, and were arguably successful in getting

The authors of “Coddling of the American Mind,” Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, use ethos, logos, and pathos convey their negative stance regarding trigger warnings and the effect they on education. Lukianoff and Haidt’s use of rhetorical appeal throughout the article adds to the author’s credibility and the strength of the argument against increasing the use of trigger warnings in school material. The authors, Lukianoff and Haidt, rely heavily upon the use of logos, such as relations between conflicts surrounding trigger warnings and other historical conflicts impacting student ethics. Examples of the use of these logical appeals are the relation between the Columbine Massacre and the younger generations ideology. The author goes on to mention other societal turning points such
Harvey Milk said, “If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.”(Aretha 83). Harvey Milk was the first gay politician that moved people’s hearts. He changed the way people thought about gay people back in the 1970’s. Defending homosexuals from criticism, he civilized them with the people. Since the background of homosexuality was harsh which affected Harvey Milk’s early life, he took the action to process of becoming civilized as an officer, and he left many legacies.
Gays in today’s society face many problems not only with the Media’s eyes, but also on college campuses. Young adults who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual experience major stresses in managing their sexual orientation.
He points out the fourteenth amendment which clearly states that there should be no laws that alter the rights of any citizens. Granderson explains that he presented this version of the “gay agenda” to show that members of the LGBT community are not asking for new rights, they only want equal rights like everyone else. He states that the reason he made the majority of his speech funny is so his audience would not feel threatened by the severity of this topic. Granderson talks about how his son is a respectful young man. He says his son does very well in school, is a budding track star, and pray every night before eating his dinner. Granderson says that he would like to think that since his son lives him for the majority of the time, he would like to think that some of it could be attributed to him. Then points out the fact that even if he wanted to, there are some states where he cannot adopt a child due to the fact he is gay. The audiences faces look somewhat painstaking at this point because they are realizing how big of a problem this

BET is also getting on the gay bandwagon and is promoting a new documentary which will air on November 2 called “Holler If You Hear Me: Black and Gay In The Church”. One of the homosexual congregants interviewed on the show was thankful for the opportunity to be heard. “I’m thinking
For three of my four years in high school, I’ve been the only out LGBT student in my entire school. I’ve had to be the poster child, the spokesperson for all things gay. I’ve had to simultaneously define and break every single gay stereotype in the book. I was the butt of every single gay joke, whether it was aimed directly at me or not.
