Gay Valedictorian Denied Speech Opportunity Gives It On Television Evan Young was the valedictorian at Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School in Longmont, Colorado. He was supposed to give the commencement speech on May 16th, but when the school administration found out that he was going to use his speech to come out as gay they told him to rewrite the speech. He said that he took out other parts that the school disapproved of, but would not take remove the part of his coming out. The school refused to recognize Young as the valedictorian, and also called his parents, possibly inadvertently outing the teen before he was ready. On Thursday, Evan was flown to the Comedy Central studios and given the opportunity to give an abridged version of his speech on Larry Wilmore's “The Nightly Show”. Wilmore started things out with typical humor, “You can't shout out, you cant come out, next thing their going to want you to wear pants under those robes.” He then let him give his speech as the …show more content…

Young adjusted and continued, “In the words of one of my heroes, Larry Wilmore,” and he was allowed to continue. Wilmore told him that since it was TV he could only give an abridged version of the message, but that the whole transcript would be placed on the web site. Young quickly got to the point, mentioned that he was gay, stated that “we can still be friends even if we profoundly disagree with each other”, and encouraged everyone to hug each other.
