Example 2: Lincoln’s second inaugural speech The irony of people being divided is also shown in Lincoln’s Second Inaugural speech in which the north is fighting against slavery and the south fighting for it. The speech is made even more poignant in which Lincoln has to make the point about abolishing slavery and has to fight for it. Commentary: Lincoln’s vital speech structure proposes an aid from one another to bind together and rise up to the task to fight for not just one person’s life and future, but for everyone. The celebratory attitude of the speech suggests a sense of hope that everything will be fine in the end. Example: Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address The subject at hand in Lincoln’s address was the civil war, and although there were a lot of people lost, the people were able to unite and fight for a common interest, help each other and become one, or in this case 2, the Confederacy and the United States Commentary: During Lincoln’s speech, he used pathos, to appeal to his audience’s emotions and talked about how terrible the entire war was, yet still, everyone was able to come together and fight for their one conflict, which was the fact that black people were not treated equally. Instead of being treated like the common man, they were treated more like pets who were only used for labor. Commentary During his Inaugural Address, he used Ad Populum, appeal to the people, so that he could get their approval and end the war more quickly. He used Ad populum to ensure that everyone saw him humanized and saw him as one of them.
