This passage gives readers an idea of what the island that they are stranded on is like. Since it is still in the beginning of the book everything is still calm on the island with very little violence, whereas in the end of the book the scenery of the island changes drastically with all the violence and savagery happening. Based on illuminating word phrases, eye-catching imagery, and bold descriptions, readers can get a feel as to what the island life is like with no adults around. Throughout the whole story there are many word choices and phrases that make the story the way it is. The illuminating word phrases are a big part of this section of the book. The island is still super calm with no one killing each other and the kids’ survival techniques haven’t really kicked in yet. The eye-catching imagery in this passage really gives readers an image in their mind as to what the island looks like while it is still calm. When the author says “A sliver of moon rose over the horizon, hardly large enough to make a path of light even when it sat right down on the water; but there were other lights in the sky, that moved fast, winked, or went out.” readers get an image as to what the surrounding is like. From what the author said readers can just imagine this cool summer night on a deserted island with a little light given off by the moon. Readers know that the island is super calm right now with the author describing the island as calm. Another example of eye-catching imagery in this passage from the book is when the author says “There was a sudden bright explosion and corkscrew trail across the sky; then darkness again and stars.” When the author says this, readers get a sense of living the deserted island life. Readers can tell that there was obviously something in the sky that startled them if it was like a “bright explosion”. These examples really catch readers eyes and make them think deeply about what it is actually like in the book.
