Evan Say What did the Zodiac Killer do? The zodiac killer is an unidentified serial killer who is confirmed to be responsible for at least 5 deaths in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1968 to 1969. While it may be regarded as one of the largest mysteries of the 20th century what did he do in that timespan? The first confirmed incident took place on the night of December 20, 1968, when David Faraday and his girlfriend Betty Lou Jensen were shot to death at a remote spot on Lake Herman Road, on the outskirts of Vallejo California. Within an hour of the incident, a man called the local police, giving them the location of the crime scene and claiming responsibility for both that attack and the 1968 murders of Faraday and Jensen. Despite this and Mageau's description of the assailant, little progress was made in the case. It is clear from these killings of teenage couples that this was the killer's main target group. On August 1, 1969, three San Francisco newspapers each received an identical handwritten letter in an envelope without a return address. It began "Dear Editor: I am the killer of the 2 teenagers last Christmas at Lake Herman" (Biography, 4) with details from the murders and threats of attacks if they were not featured in the paper. Each letter was closed with a symbol consisting of a circle and a cross and was accompanied by a three-part cipher that he claimed to contain his identity. Then days later high school teacher Donald Harden and his wife Bettye were able to solve it, which began "I like killing people because it is so much fun."
