Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream in Progress Martin Luther King Jr. has most definitely had a major impact on society today. Many good and bad things came from his movement. Since his movement, segregation has been abolished from all over the U.S., we have had our first black president, and an outstanding number of mixed families and working blacks have emerged. Although there has been a great number of positive outcomes, the hope Dr. King had given to many has essentially faded. Although slavery is nonexistent, racism is still proven. Many blacks are bound by the color of their skin. For example, police brutality and recent shootings have gone to show that the majority of modern white men have a special outlook on those of color. King spoke with a purpose and dreamed of peace. He risked his life to help motivate his people by using his inspiring speeches and actions. The cornerstone of King’s strategy was the use of nonviolent protests, which were influenced by Mahatma Ghandi. “As a mentor to King, Benjamin Mays encouraged him to read Ghandi’s writings, which informed King’s leadership of the bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955. King later wrote that Ghandi’s teachings were “the guiding light of our technique of nonviolent social change.” (Politico). He proceeded to change the views and beliefs of the nation and went on to lead his people through the journey of the civil rights movement. “It’s a sad fact of today’s society that King’s vision is not a reality in America, or anywhere else in the world; but it is possible to say that his vision affected us.” (Your). Today, many blacks have a better chance to be successful. Schools and workplaces are no longer segregated, giving blacks a chance to better their lives. This also helps them to excel in academics, gain respect, and support their families. Take President Obama as an example. Many blacks have been content and inspired by the election of the first black president of the U.S. This has shown hope that Dr. King’s dream is actually coming true. Biracial marriages are also very common in the world today. Used to, they were highly looked down upon and sometimes not allowed at all. Although whites are still considered the primary race of the U.S., blacks have been given the same rights and freedom as everyone else, giving them the chance to live a happy, free life, all thanks to Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of his time. He saw that segregation was wrong and decided to do something about it. He endured through hard times, all the while working to better the lives of others. With his help many people began to take a stand against the racial inequality and injustice against African Americans. He left a lasting impact and improved the lives of thousands living in America and changed the future for those yet to come.

On April 4, 1968 shortly after 1800 hours, Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot while standing on the hotel balcony of his second story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee (Saferstein, 2014). King was in Memphis to support a sanitation workers strike and was on his way to dinner when he was shot in the head and neck area. After Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger, king wanted to end the humiliating treatment of blacks on city bus liners. He decided to start the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted 382 days. Eventually, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Montgomery bus segregation laws illegal. King showed great inspiration despite receiving several threatening phone calls, being arrested and having his house being bombed, he still firmly believed in nonviolence. The boycott was the first step to end segregation, king displayed great leadership and educated the whole nation that nonviolence was the best possible was to end a problem, even if it took a while for people to notice your protest.

Over the course of his life, Dr. King would lead and participate in multiple non-violent protests against segregation. On the first of December, 1955, the arrest of Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Alabama would trigger the first of many protests led by King. The Montgomery bus boycott would last for 385 days and was so tense that King’s house was bombed. He was later arrested and released after the United States District Courts ruled that segregation on all Montgomery public buses was illegal. This paved the way for King to lead many more protests in his life and becoming a major leader in the desegregation movement.

Throughout his education, Martin Luther King Jr. tried to find a way to demonstrate his belief of racial equality with the most effective means possible. He quickly realized that the best strategy to end segregation was to use nonviolent forms of protest. At Crozer, Morehouse and Boston University, he studied the teaching of Mohandas Gandhi, who used nonviolent methods to help India claim its independence from Britain. King read several books on the ideas of Gandhi, and eventually became convinced that his methods could be employed by African Americans to obtain equality in America. King knew that any violence on the part of African Americans would lead to violent responses from segregationists, which would lead to injury or maybe even death for his followers. Gandhi was known first for his nonviolence behavior and would condemn his own party opposing violence. Gandhi made use of nonviolent and passive resistance through non-cooperation as his weapon of choice in the conflict against the British. The butchery of civilians by British military personnel resulted in increased public anger and acts of violence. Mahatma Gandhi criticized both the activities of British Government and the revenge of the butchery from the Indians. He extended consolation to the British victims and denounced the riots. Initially his party was opposed to his declaration. Later, however, they accepted Gandhi’s principal stating that any retaliation or violence was hurtful and could not be justified. Growing up in the South I experienced the affects of desegregation in the schools and saw how one person standing up for what they believe in could make a difference. On the national stage Martin Luther King Jr. was a powerful agent of change. He stood up for what he believed in and was subjected to abuse and violence as a result. Martin Luther King became the leader of a movement that forced huge changes in this country - from desegregation to voting rights to equal opportunity laws.
