Many individuals participated in boycotts and sit-ins in an attempt to change their community for the better. (Blumberg 18) The young people during the 1960?s greatly influenced the course of the Civil Rights movement by their efforts and actions. Students played a large role in the desegregation of both public grade schools and universities. College students also formed and took part in new political groups such as the Black Panther Party and Students for a Democratic Society. (Blumberg 73) Because of their heavy political involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, students across the country created a new institution: the political university.
Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the Beginning of the Environmental Movement in the United States When Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published in 1962, it generated a storm of controversy over the use of chemical pesticides. Miss Carson's intent in writing Silent Spring was to warn the public of the dangers associated with pesticide use. Throughout her book are numerous case studies documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with these facts, she explains how in many instances the pesticides have done more harm than good in eradicating the pests they were designed to destroy. In addition to her reports on pesticide use, Miss Carson points out that many of the long-term effects that these chemicals may have on the environment, as well as on humans, are still unknown.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an effective influential activist that revolutionized our world today with the Civil Rights Movement through his strong ambitions, actions, and powerful speeches. Martin Luther King Jr. was a very influential man. He crafted great speeches and writings that caused a strong change for the Civil Rights. He wrote letters that encouraged people to act and to make a change (Leone, 1996). After this, people started to gain to raise energy for a change in the rights for black African Americans.
A hero is someone who has courage and the ability to help others. Some people might refer to their hero as their role model. No matter what someone may name their hero, almost everyone has one. The person who chooses their hero wants their hero to be an inspiring role model whom they can look up to while they are going through rough times. Since the beginning of time, people have had heroes because heroes are the people that set a good example for the public and have they noble qualities that are obvious for everyone to see.
By admitting that he is the message, he also acknowledges that he knows he has enough worth for other people to look up to him and follow his actions. He goes through a huge change by admitting this; as he goes from envying role models in the beginning of the book, to actually becoming one. I have many heroes in my life and they have helped me immensely. The two biggest heroes in my life would have to be my parents. A hero to me is someone who has perseverance, is compassionate, and selfless. First, my father shows some of the best examples of perseverance. Perseverance is when you get knocked down and you get up and keep going.

There she informs the public of how dangerous the use of pesticides can be and is able to get people to see the harm they cause to the environment. During that time the pesticide that caused so much worriment was DDT or Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane. DDT is a pesticide created by Paul Herman Muller, which won a Nobel Prize in Physiology Medicine. At that time no research was made on DDT and the damages it could have to the environment.
