I chose to do my project on the movie, Hitch. Hitch has always been one of my favorite movies & I was super excited when I saw it was on the list of movie options. The movie is named after the main character, Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, who is played by Will Smith. Hitch is a very successful dating coach. The movie focuses on one particular client, Albert Brennaman, who is played by Kevin James. Albert is a dorky, chubby, financial advisor who has a big crush on the glamorous Allegra Cole, who is played by Amber Valletta. Although, with the help of Hitch, Albert makes great strides with Allegra, Hitch, himself, faces some setbacks when his techniques fail to work on the woman he is after, Sara Melas, played by Eva Mendes. Sara is a tabloid reporter for a gossip column who is looking to expose the love life of Allegra Cole. Through her research and thriving relationship with Hitch, Sara discovers Hitch’s connection to Albert, who is now Allegras boyfriend. Nonverbal communication is so important to pick up on in a relationship because it brings light to opinions and thought that are not voiced. I noticed this concept in the first kiss scene. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
The presence of nonverbal messages in our communication is very important. Following the text, researchers have estimated it is up to “65 percent of social meaning we convey in face-to-face interactions is a result of nonverbal behavior” (131). The movie “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a typical example about the interactions among characters, also with audience. Several scenes in this movie show us the effects of nonverbal messages in communication, especially through the character Daniel, who disguises himself as a middle-aged British nanny in order to be near his children.

Throughout Finding Nemo we see many different types of nonverbal communication through gestures, actions, and reactions of characters that show us how important nonverbal communication really is. It is very crucial in plain daily communication as my examples support the meaning of messages and the importance. Although Finding Nemo has more nonverbal examples from what I have written it is important to know that it has various forms that replace certain parts of verbal. Understanding nonverbal communication can make it much easier for one in a situation because they would be able to pick up on the messages. Dory might not have picked up on the messages Marlin was giving but in a situation like this a different approach would have to be taken. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate.
