As the United States possesses a vast government there tends to be a controversy on how exactly the government’s runs and what kind of form it is. There are many forms to government, democracy, republic, oligarchy, constitutional republic etc. Although, it can be debated as to what true form of government our country is really, in the year 2016 the government is a republic. Benjamin Franklin was once asked what kind of government we had when the United States was forged and he replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” A republic may not be easy to maintain or keep but it is the best thing our country can have. In this often stated ritual in the United States is says… “I pledge allegiance, to the flag of the united states of America, and to the republic for which it stands.” This is saying we the United States are a republic, where people are sovereign. We are pledging allegiance to our Republic. It can be said the pledge was made with the idea in mind that together we are a republic, it’s what the founders wanted. They did not want to control the government by individual voters, but instead by the representatives. The republic is built to create liberty and justice for all, just as another part of the pledge of allegiance stated. The exact article and sections states… “The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.” This is in article four, section four of the constitution. It is that no state can join the United States unless that state is a republic. The framers of the constitution were also taught that anything besides a republic would take away both personal and security rights. They wanted something that would last long because they knew other forms of government did not.
