Eventually, Ray misses a block in a game, causing a near-season-ending injury to Petey. Due to this, Gerry cuts Ray from the team. Ray walks off into darkness, clinging on to his racist beliefs as Gerry stays in the changing rooms, illuminated by light. As viewers, we can see the one person that is still racist being overwhelmed by the integrated community, which is juxtaposed from the start, where the integrated community is overwhelmed by the racist white community.
