Was there any relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Heming? An American controversy which is persisted to the present day. As historians do, they let the dust rest for a while and then look at both sides of the issue to form any conclusion. Every historian has its own way of thinking an interpreting the event. Just like all other controversial historical topic, Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings relationship has also been put through different perspectives. He was the third president of the United States and was the author of the Declaration of Independence. He was a leading figure in America’s early development and the governor of Virginia who served in the Virginia legislature during American revolutionary war. Along with serving as a U.S. minister to France and U.S., Jefferson was elected as a president from 1801 to 1809. Jefferson’s thoughts on the national government was that they ought to have limited role in citizen’s lives. In Jefferson's administration, Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark expedition are among the best accomplishments. Jefferson contended that as the time and circumstances changes, laws and constitutions must change along. He argued that ever generation should have the capacity to make its own particular laws and make its own administration. Furthermore, he got married to a young widow named Martha Wayles Skelton in 1772 and lived in Monticello and his wife’s sudden death in 1782 overwhelmed him with a deep distress. Thomas Jefferson’s presidential actions are often less remembered than his work on the Declaration of Independence and his other Revolutionary War contributions, despite their impact on how the United States would, literally, take shape. There were many outcomes from his time in office, the eight years from 1801 to 1809, some good, others less so. Still, I believe that, on the whole, his administration benefited the nation. For one thing, President Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase added hundreds of thousands square miles to the size of the United States. Another, though less direct influence he had was that, in initiating the case of Marbury v. Madison, he unintentionally aided the Supreme Court in gaining the power to exercise judicial review.

Interracial relationships were a very controversial idea in the American society when slavery began. If one were to have an interracial relationship it would be kept in the dark from society or a consequence was paid. The link between Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson was Martha Wayles Jefferson. John Wayles was the father of both Martha Wayles and Sally Hemings, making them half-sisters. Martha Wayles also married Thomas Jefferson. “After the death of John Wayles and Martha Wayles, Thomas Jefferson inherited the ownership Hemings family and moved them to Monticello. This was the permanent living arrangement for the Hemings” (Sally Hemings’s Parisian Affair, Kelly Wilkens). This is where Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings relationship began. “Some speculate that due to their kinship, Hemings and Martha Jefferson may have looked very similar which could have been a key factor in Jefferson’s attraction to Sally Hemings” (Wilkens). Thomas Jefferson, an educated, well respected career man, served as governor of Virginia, secretary of state, and president of the United States. The Revolutionary era, during the 1770's, proved to be one of America's most victorious times. Despite the casualties the American colonies suffered, they proved to be stronger than their ruling land, Britain, and won the right to be a free land, becoming the United States of America. Living through this difficult turning point in history inspired Jefferson to write "The Declaration of Independence." Once again, nearly two hundred years later, America faced yet another turning point in history.
THOMAS JEFFERSON, author of the Declaration of Independence, was born on April 13, 1743 and grew up on the family plantation at Shadwell in Albermarle County, Virginia. His father was Peter Jefferson, who, with the aid of thirty slaves, tilled a tobacco and wheat farm of 1,900 acres and like his fathers before him, was a justice of the peace, a vestryman of his parish and a member of the colonial legislature. The first of the Virginia Jefferson's of Welsh extraction, Peter in 1738 married Jane Randolph. Of their ten children, Thomas was the third. Thomas inherited a full measure of his father's bodily strength and stature, both having been esteemed in their prime as the strongest men of their county. He also inherited his father's inclination to liberal politics, his taste for literature and his aptitude for mathematics. The Jefferson's were a musical family; the girls sang the songs of the time, and Thomas, practicing the violin assiduously from boyhood, became an excellent performer.
Rumors about the affair between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings were circulating on a small scale after Hemings gave birth to several children who were noticeably light-skinned. Visitors as early as 1796 to Monticello, Jefferson's home in Virginia, often noted, "Mr. Jefferson's [slaves] had neither in their color nor features a single trace of their origin" (Rothman 87). It was clear to many that the slave children at Monticello were the result of interracial sexual relationships. Not until James Callender made a public accusation in 1802, however, did the scandal make its way into the press.

Due to the fact that he was such an early President, he influenced our political system greatly, both in the short and long term with his seemingly quiet approach to congressional matters. During his presidency, many things happened that changed the United States as we know it. He coordinated the Louisiana Purchase, assisted in implementing the twelfth amendment, formed the character of the modern American President, and cut the U.S.’s war debt by a third. Jefferson came into office on March 4, 1801 and left office on March 4, 1809.
A Vision Achieved Jefferson envisioned a government that allowed its citizens to exercise inalienable rights. In exact words, he states, “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” To be more evident, how can we define these “inalienable rights” of “life”, “liberty”, and the “pursuit of happiness?” Have these inalienable rights, achieved Jefferson’s goal? I am convinced, Jefferson’s revolutionary vision of life, liberty, and happiness has at last been achieved in America.
It has been said that his particular taking of office had lead to the simplest speech stating that "essential principals" would guide his administration and would support all states with "equal and exact justice to all". And the actual changes of administration were the most peaceful of all, nothing like those previously. Jefferson’s accomplishments were most greatly seen by the ability to simplify the Republican government in the new capital by cutting back the unnecessary branches and less useful positions while replacing Federalists with Republicans. And by the year 1808, Republicans held almost all the government offices. At the same time, Jefferson fought to keep the size of the government from continuously growing.
Thomas Jefferson was an influential american philosopher and statesman years before being nominated then elected for presidency of the United States. He began his political career in 1769, where he served as a representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Jefferson was able to rise to fame during the American Revolution, a philosophical event, as one of the most famous spokesmen of the time. He believed in a beneficent natural order in the moral as in the physical world, freedom of inquiry in all things, and man’s inherent capacity for justice and happiness, and he had faith in reason, improvement, and progress (Gale Cengage Learning par. 4). His political belief becoming the embodiment of Enlightenment liberalism, setting the theory of an empire with equal, self-governing states under a common rule. Two Founding Fathers, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both discussed their views of aristocracy. The two disagreed on this subject, as they did on many others. In summary, Adams seemed to be more open to aristocracy, as long as it is controlled, while Jefferson rejected pseudo-aristocracy, he believed that natural aristocracy can and should be a result of government.
Jefferson, a black man condemned to die by the electric chair in the novel, A Lesson Before Dying, by Ernest J. Gaines, is perhaps the strongest character in African-American literature. Jefferson is a courageous young black man that a jury of all white men convicts of a murder he has not committed ; yet he still does not let this defeat destroy his personal character. Ernest Gaines portrays Jefferson this way to illustrate the fundamental belief that mankind’s defeats do not necessarily lead to his destruction. The author uses such actions as Jefferson still enjoying outside comforts, showing compassion towards others, and trying to better himself before dying. These behaviors clearly show that although society may cast Jefferson out as a black murderer, he can still triumph somewhat knowing that he retains the qualities of a good human being.
