In today’s society people constantly struggle between good and evil. This goes all the way back to the Victorian era. In Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson uses physical descriptions to reflect good and evil in Jekyll and Hyde. For example, Hyde’s outward appearance depicts evil. When Utterson confronts Hyde, he notices that Hyde’s features give off a detestable feeling. Hyde was a “pale and dwarfish” man with a “displeasing smile” (Stevenson 14). His unsightly features make it clear to the reader that he is someone to stay away from. Hyde gives an uneasy and sinister feeling to everyone who sees him.
